vintage RAT

Are these worth picking up?

What year? What chip? What model is the best?

AFAIK, they're all great. I love my old mid-80's small-box one, but the older, bigger-boxed or white-faced models seem to be held in higher esteem.

The new Deucetone covers all of the models and sounds great.

The chip of which you speak is the LM308. i've seen the original big box rats go for some high prices recently. i have a vintage reissue and i will never sell it.

Can anyone patch a link what these great RAT's look like? Many ebayers claim their Rat is early 80's but looks the same as the newer ones.

There are the original big-box Rats (and their reissues), and then the Rat II came out in the mid-1980s with the modern-style case and LED. I think there's very little difference in sound, the modern case is more durable (although that's relative!), and the LED is useful, just in case you somehow didn't notice it was on...

At any rate, the Rat IIs don't have the vintage cachet that the big-box Rats do, so they're MUCH cheaper, and well worth picking up. Definitely get an older LM308 model over any recent model, though... I've tried both, and it makes a BIG difference in sound.

+1 on the LM308. I bought my LM308 RAT II for $25 and its been the best $25 I ever spent on gear.

The early small Rat II's didn't have LEDS or any on/off indicator at all. I've had mine since '85.

I had an original '82 Rat. I'm sorry I sold it. You have to go by the pot codes for dating.

I've heard the BYOC Rat's are just as good.

Except for the case. And the step-on-a-roach footswitch!

I imagine the circuit isn't hard to duplicate at all.

I like the late 80s Rat 2 with the LED. I have tried them all, and there's something slightly more aggro and bigger with the LED version. I got mine for $40 at a pawn shop.
