12 String recommendation please
What I'm thinking of here is in the $7-900 used, and doesn't have to be tuned down. Thinking Taylor, but even used is a stretch
Thoughts and recommendations very much appreciated!! ![]() Edward |

In that range...I personally would go for a new Alvarez AJ60S12 Artist Series Jumbo ...they go for under $500 New...I have one as a back up to my Guild JF65-12...It's not as loud as the Guild..but VERY close...It's without a doubt one of the best values I have ever found..I love maple 12 string Jumbos..and the Solid Engelmann top is unheard of in this price range...GREAT GUITAR..check it out. Cool, and thanks for the pic! Where are Alv's made?
I like getting used for the simple reason of more bang-fer-buck. I like being able to keep it at concert pitch, though, as I avoid capos when possible. Thinking of Guild, Adamas, and especially Taylor as these came up on the bay in the sub-900 range, and the latter two allow you to keep em pitched normally. A bit nervous about the Guild, though, as I've heard (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone) that their QC was inconsistent in the latter years before their demise). Any other thoughts very much welcome! I'd recommend the Guild GAD series...Made in China, along with the Alvarez, but all solid woods...I'm pretty sure the Guild GAD's, Alvarez , and Epiphone Masterbilt guitars are all made in the same factory.
You've got your Dread style 12-string w/ Mahogany Back & Sides... http://www.guildguitars.com/instrume...tno=3813200821 You've got your Jumbo style 12-string w/ Maple Back & Sides... http://www.guildguitars.com/instrume...tno=3813500801 You've got your Folk style 12-string w/ Mahogany Back & Sides... http://www.guildguitars.com/instrume...tno=3813400821 They run around $700 new... |

A used Guild or New GAD would be your ticket.
When Guild were built in Corona they did have some quality issues in regards to finish and sound, not to construction however. Anyway, as recent as between '95 and '01 Westerly still put out Guilds so you could get a rather new one from the haydays of Guild for not that much money. Guild btw makes perhaps the most rigid guitars all categories and maybe more so with their 12-string guitars, e.g. their necks featuring double trussrods and being full length (!) meaning 25.5 to 25 5/8" long. If you don't go any heavier than .010 it shouldn't be a problem. For more insight on how their guitars keep up you can always pop by LetsTalkGuild.com |

Moreover the Jumbo is a full 17" thing and the Folk Style here is actually a 16" Jumbo contraption. |

Wow..just for the heck of it I checked my guilds Serial #..It was one of the last JF65-12's to come from Westerly, RI. '97 was the last year..They made 64 (AJ620305 to AJ620369)...I've got #360...It's a killer 12..very loud,balanced...truly a "piano" tone...playing an 1st position G chord the bass strings are really articulate...the sound compresses a bit then rings on...my main acoustic..love that guitar...the guitar did get a little belly rise below the bridge over the last 10 years but nothing abnormal...it really happened in the 1st 2 years then stabilized..that's the main thing to look out for in a big jumbo 12...that the bridge isn't pulling up and of course the neck...but it has the double rods so the necks are usually fine...it's the bridge thats weaker...The Guilds (to me) are the best sounding 12 strings, but the top end Westerlies are pretty much in the 12-1600 range..Altho the Taylors are at least as much if not more. I remember checking Taylors when I bought the Guild..The Guild felt/played/sounded better, to me anyway. The Alvarez was a musicians friend purchase...for less than $500, it's not as complex sounding, but it's a fine "workingmans" 12 string. It's loud/bright and percussive..I think it'll "open up" more as the top settles in, then it should lose a little of it's brightness and get harmonicly richer...I am just really impressed at the quality and sound for the price..that was bang for the buck!..The label says made in Korea.
