Budda Cabs/Speakers

I have a SD II 18 head coming and was wondering of anyone has experimented with other cabs to match this head. I'm open to getting the Budda cab but there are alot of choices out there. My inclination would be for a oversized 1x12 closed back cab with some type of Greenback.

I wouldn't do the closed back cab unless you like it real tight sounding. Buddas sound beautiful/best IMO with open back cabs. This has a tendency to get them too dark and takes away some of the great high end.

I have a SD 30 2-12, stock speakers. These are great as is. Many Budda owners will tell you no need to replace these speakers!!

I did try it through my real deal 69 marshall cab with 25 watters and I think the stock Budda cabs and speakers can't be beat.

If you want a little more low end thump so it simulates the bigger cab sound just get a e.q. and boost the low end a touch.

I have tried my Budda through many speakers that I own just for fun. IMO,Stay with the phat speakers. Although all these speakers did do something a little differently, none of them was a marked improvement.

Here's the list:

25 watt celestion with original 014 cones- Highly regarded
30H's
Weber Silver bell
Weber Blue Dog

I think it depends on your guitar, etc.

I have a very dark guitar but my SD 80 sounds great and Big with the 2x12 Orange, thou it also sounded great with the Semi Open Avatar cab with one V30 and one 12h30

It would be good for you to try the amp with an open cab and a closed cab.

By the way, although i don't have Phat speakers, i tried a SD 80 with a 4x12 phat cab and it sounded wonderful

Thanks guys,

I want to keep volume down a bit so I was thinking the closed back would be best at keeping stage volume lower . . .but I don't want to hurt the tone.

The Budda speakers to me have a more modern sound to them. I've tried to like them but they just don't work for me. They are definitely solid speakers though.

Recently I swapped the Budda Phat 12s out of my Budda cab and put in a G12H30 and V30 and it sounds much better now. These speakers warm the tone up and open up the amp's treble range in a good way (more control). It also definitely sounds more vintage now. I guess it all depends on what tone you're looking for.

One thing I disagree on is the open back with the Budda speakers. That combo always sounds way too "midrangey" to me. I was never happy with that tone when I had my Budda amp as a combo. The Budda Phat 12s are just that...fat sounding...kind of like a aural exciter was applied to a Vintage 30. It gives the tone a modern edge.

SD30 series I head owner here. I personally perfer my Budda with a closed back cab. I usually run mine through one of 2 Marshall 4x12s. One with GBs, the other w/G12H30s (mid 70s cab). The SD 30 has a wonderful warm thick tone with some sag/squish - so I prefer bottom end that a closed back cab provides for my rock/classic rock tones.

I'm indifferent about oversized cabs in general. Sometimes I find them a bit boomy in the bottom end - so I prefer a more standard sized cab. But, I honestly haven't tried my Budda with an oversized cab. It could be a good match.

I use three guitars

Tyler Classic - Strat
McInturff Taurus - Medium gain tones of LP plus great cleans
Vigier - set for heavier stuff.

I want that gorgeous blue rock brown tone I hear from Bonamassa .. .and on the SD 18 lead clip on the Budda site. Warm, fat, rich and cutting . . .all at the same time. Marshally I hope.

I like my THD 212 cabinet with my Budda SD18 head. The gain channel can sound a little ratty when facing the cabinet but, off axis, it is very nice and smooth. By the way, I use a plexiglass shield in front of the cabinet so no one else hears the ratty, on-axis tone.

ratty ?? I think alot of speakers sound that way right in front of them

I ordered the matching 1x12 Budda closed back, this way I can make up my mind about the amp based on the way it's supposed to sound.
