Good cab mic in your opinion???
So far I have experiemented with the SM57, SM58, MXL990, and MXL 991 and have found that I can get a good sound with the MXL990 over any of the other ones for what I am recording anyway. I was having a hard time capturing the sound of a good clean strat with a compressor and an overdrive. The MXL990 did the best of the rest. Now the SM57 worked great when I was recording anything that was high gain or just Marshall loud.
I've been looking at buying a "nice" mic under $200. What do you reccomend? I've been reading a lot that a people like the Synhieser 906. That is what I am leaning towards right now unless you guys have any better ideas. I want a good mic for capturing nice rich dynamics and warmth. So I assuming that a condesor is my best bet. |

I have used an audix d3, sm57, and senheiser 609 with good results.
With my setup, the sm57 gives more sizzle and cut, and the 609 was warmer, smoother, but a bit duller. The D3 was cool, but it was a gig, so I cannot say how they record. I liked to use a condenser and grill mic for ambient stuff, but the cab mic works fine for rock to my ears. |

I thought it was just me. I have been using an MXL990 on my cabs for recording and it sounds great. I am pretty happy about it because I didn't care for it for vocals. Good price too

Frankencat and StratTone, what style, sound, guitar, amp, etc. are you using and where are you placing the 990? I've had decent results, ( to my ears ), on vocals with a 990, and also when paired with a 991 on an acoustic guitar But I didn't do very well mic'ing a low wattage combo with it. I tried several positions and distances but I couldn,t get anything decent. An SM57 at the edge of the cone area, angled about 45' across, and right up on the grillcloth sounded most like what I feel in the room.

Mic placement is crucial. Did you move those mics around? Pointing towards the center of the cone, then at the middle, then the edge. Then angle the mic. Then take it out away from the cone a bit. I think you'd notice a lot of options in there.
