Help with Rock School songs for High School class

I was offered an opportunity to put together 3 or 4 rock bands
with the overflow from the Jazz Band.
- in other words the kids are bouncing off the wall.
I have around 18 students = 3 or 4 bands.

What I would like is suggestions for rock styles

For example, Reggae, Blues, Pink Floyd, Led Zep ???
Each band plays one style only.
No blues with Pink Floyd.
I mean "blues" real blues.

No Metal, got the word from the teacher, has to be fairly conservative.
No Zappa, darn

Do you have thoughts on what four different styles could work??
And then, what might be good song choices in that style?

I don't even know about singing.

Maybe instrumental surf??

You should ask the kids.

Ither iwse the standard stuff I here "Jazz Band", like it the stands at football games and at their concerts is stuff like:

25 or 6 to 4
Iron Man
We Are the Champions
Brick House

And stuff like that.

BUT...

The high school bands that the kids put together play a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT set of music.

Ask the kids and let them be influenced by the other kids in the bands musical tastes. (I'm sire they won't all like the same music, but it'll be good to let the other kids influence rub off on each other)

Maybe make arrangements of a couple of tunes that are medley's of a few of the different tunes they give you. That way they'll all be in the songs because they contain a little bit of their.

The band-coaching class that I used to teach had a lot of fun with stuff by Crowded House, REd Hot chilli Peppers and Alanis Morrisette, along with a bunch of stuff that nobody ever heard off, except those bandmembers that requested it.

a beatles band - a lot to learn from doing the canon

a 70s progressive band (yes/rush/genesis/kansas/tull/crimson/ELP/ELO etc.) - i like this for the chance to bring in other less-traditional instruments like flute/violin/cellos, etc)

We did the Six Wives of Henry the VIII by Rick Wakeman (I think that was the name of it) in concert band in high school. It's was very cool to us teenagers. We did it with the Jazz band playing also. So you had the concert band covering the "arrangements" and the jazz band covering the rock parts. It was very cool.

Pearl Jam is great stuff to cover, and lots of variety within their catalogoe, plus they have done swags of covers to give variety. Lots of "The Who" covers, which would be good too.

You're right, ask the kids.

I'll ask them "choose something other than metal".
That should be interesting.

I got the word, no loud scream bands or anything close to that.
It'll be good for them.

I want to keep a handle on it. each band be a certain style.
But I need to figure what to ask of them. I don't wan't them to
get pissed they have no choice.
Hey, it is school. When did any teacher ask me what I thought.
But I will ask and include them.
Good suggestions.
