If it happened with 2 different speakers , they may be too much for that thiele to handle -
some kind of resonance/standing wave mismatch thing , or see mb's post re: baffle .

What you are describing was never an issue with any EV speaker I've ever used.

I've pushed a Marshall Major in to a single 200W 12L and the amp gave way first.
Also I've never had a single failure with a 12L. What you describe is something the 12L does not do and the fact that two are doing it points to something else. I've seen some situations where a 12L can cause all sort of cab weaknesses to show, in fact in one combo that originally came with a Celestion, the low end of the 12L damn near destroyed the cab.

my EV 12L does the same thing as tweedbucket describes when pushed too hard and has decent low end but certainly nothing amazing. So if it's a defect it must be a common one. The speaker functions perfect until hit too hard, has no rubbing etc. Doesn't bother me because it's not my favorite sounding speaker anyway and rediculously heavy.

I have had at least a dozen EVM 12Ls and I use one now. None of them have done what you describe. I actually turned one up high enough to blow it up and didn't have your experience. It must be the amp.

The reason Mesa started putting suspension in the Mark II's is that 100 watts when used in a single 12" combo cab with an EVM was shaking the electronics apart. Blues Saraceno had a lot of problems with the non suspension models because he was really cranking the things for hours at a time.

Mesa MkIII It's not like a tube overdriving .... like I said, I will test it out with another amp. I guess anything is possible. Quote:

No problem with my EVM12L.
I do get break-up with my Hot Cat 100R, but it's coming from the amp.

Try it with Volume 1 at 6 or below, if there is a graphic eq turn it off. Don't have either of the bass pull pots pulled and don't have the bass beyond about 2 1/2, in the clean channel. Make sure you are plugged into the 8 ohm jack with the amp in the 100 watt mode and redo the speaker connections. If you still have trouble there is a problem in the amp.

I had a long love/hate relationship with EVMs in the 70th and early 80th. If you used single 12" combos, there were no any serious alternatives to the EVM-12. They sound unmusical and have a diabolic mixture of being harsh and foggy at the same time. It is so nice to have so many great alternatives in terms of speakers these days.
