I've been using the edirol r09 for tons of stuff and I'm very pleased with it. World's away from the old md/dat setup and much easier to use overall

I don't yet own one but the Sony D50 is causing me GAS. When compairing prices be aware that the Sony comes with 4GB of memory built in, the Edirol comes with a 64MB SD card that will need to be upgraded, to get usefull recording time from it.

The sony looks awful nice to me too! It'll do 24/96 and it's got an optical digital input, so you could hook it up to a nice A/D and do really top quality field recording without having to lug around an old DAT deck or a computer and interface.

Marantz has a new one out too that looks good, the PMD620, designed to accommodate SD cards up to 2 Terabytes!! Not that that exists yet but it most likely will someday...

There's a new Olympus that we saw at NAMM that looks terrific. I'm getting one as soon as they are released on Feb 20th.

Small size, and a bonus was that it can also record directly to MP3 format, which I liked.

I have the Sony PCM50 and I'm very pleased with it.

It's very well built and sturdy. The controls and buttons have a nice feel. The large screen is easy on the eyes. It's very well thought out, making it easy and intuitive to use. The built in mics and pres sound excellent.

Overall, it's a winner!

I like that as well. The remote looked like a really cool feature.

Very cool, thanks for that!

http://www.proaudioreview.com/pages/s.0035/t.514.html

According to this it looks like I can still use my DMP3 as a mic preamp, actually in stereo, to feed the H4's 1/4 line ins. Nice, looks like only the quattro has to bite the dust then since the H4 acts as a usb interface as well, and i can still use my condenser and dynamic mics. In fact, I can use all my recording gear and play downstairs portably instead of being married to the computer upstairs, which is a biiig deal in my house. Heck, I can even record in the bathroom!

Good stuff, thanks again, just scored an H4 on fleabay so we'll see how it goes, I'll report back! (oh and by the way the funds for this just killed an amp purchase, so again TGP has made my wife happy, kinda).
