Ric, on 1.56 it says smooth and balanced tone and I click on the ptp which is on the right side..Then it says trebly and harsh and I play the smd which trebly and hars sounding. Also on 2.00 when I click on the smd it says mid scooped which is scooped if you listen to it carefully..So its not the oposite

I'll have to check out the vid after work when I have access to better speakers. In my own experience I've only heard one of the new SMD burst E's. I have to say that I like my old PTP burst version better. Who knows if I just came out on the lucky side of the variance on the PTP's or if there is a marked difference between the two? The sample size is just too small for me to make a sweeping judgement. I'm excited to listen to the clips tonight after work though and see what your comparison sounds like. Cool thread!

In some settings they sounded very similar, but where there were differences, the PTP sounded better to me, for whatever reason. Could be a number of reasons.

Hmmm, would love to compare it one day. We don't have a rehearsal space at the moment (moved out of the one you've seen), we're building a new one. Once we're settled there I'll contact you !

Ptp sounds thicker, smoother and less scooped.

Yes, I agree. But what I meant was, for a number of technical reasons. Is the SMD version the same schematically as that particular PTP E? There are so many versions of the E out there...

PTP has significantly more wire in it that can roll off high end but also add noise.. the tone control is different and it will go darker at counter clockwise.

SMD has more diodes in the feedback loop for increased headroom.. The $25 TB relay config in this one does draw a bit more current that can have a very minor effect on voicing.. Tone control is brighter in this one because of a minor value change.. I bet if you put a carbon battery in the SMD version, dump the tone control backwards and did a blind test you couldn't tell them apart..

I could hear a bit of a difference in a couple of bits in those clips. Other bits I could not hear a difference at all.

When I say I could hear a difference, I don't think I could say I liked one more than the other - both sounded awesome to me.

As Sean says, you could dial the SMD to sound like the PTP anyway.

Hey Sean - any idea when my Purple Plexi 800 will ship

Thanks sean for the heads up. Btw what does 25 tb relay config mean?

Pedals sounded very similar to me, with the main difference being the position of the glass knob.

Really good video though, well done.

Just listened to the clips through some decent speakers. I guess now my sample size is up to two for preferring the tone of the PTP version :AOK

$25 in parts not counting labor to configure that soft touch true bypass relay system into the unit..

I really think the differences btw PTP vs SMD are so minor sound wise its become a dead issue for me.. I have 2 years into the conversion and countless hours of sampling both units in many different settings..

The SMD build does not fail, is quieter and more consistent unit to unit..
Those are the differences that prompt me to make a move to SMD.. Its a low voltage/low current product.. SMD is far superior in this case all the way around.. also, it costs more $ to produce an SMD product in my shop vs PTP.. I guess I could send it overseas get it made for 3 bucks but that would go against what I'm trying to achieve with very HI END, HANDBUILT STUFF with my own personal tweak on tone here.. Make no mistake.. these SMD's are still handbuilt.. it may look different inside but the quality has risen above anything I could ever do in a PTP fashion..

I'm hoping people's paranoia about the SMD will subside...The new E build is fantastic, and the video shows how close they are (a few tweaks and I don't think anyone could tell a difference).

Maybe a blind challenge would convince people.
