alone? no. not really, I would say...

But mixed with other overdrive (ideally amp overdrive, i would say...), it gives an incredible dirty growly noisey biting sound that I fookin love. You know that growl inbetween notes that sounds super aggressive (Brian May comes to mind for the sort of thing - but much much dirtier!). Well you can get that in spades. Or roll down the tone and get a smooth round deep sound.

It's actually been a while since I played with my big muff [HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh dear... ] so I can't really give a complete description. Step up next poster...

Gives me sustain for days and I think that comes in handy for leads.

Great description!
That Cello-tone that someone else started a thread about...The Big Muff sprang to my mind. They sound different w/ a clean/dirty amp, but both good, IMO. Can sound like a machine...blender or small motor.

Go to www.myspace.com/theautumnisles and listen to "Gift to You". The solo and guitar doubling the "la la la" bit is all Muff!

Well, Tele -> Maxon OD-9 set clean -> Muff -> Fender Super Reverb.

the sustain from the big muff is part of its signature sound but i find that the mid scoop doesn't totally make lead parts stand out. i run my muff with a tube screamer in front of it and i find that the mid hump in the screamer helps bring out the muff in the mix.

+1 My muff is modded for a slight mid hump so no TS required (tho it does help!)

Not everyone's cup o' tea, but for Big Muff leads, check out Dinosaur Jr.
