What's your preference and why? On what guitar? Amp?

Rio Grande Jazzbar. Used one in nearly every P-90 guitar I've had, I just love the pickup - especially in the neck position. Sounds great with vintage & modern amps, very versatile and very P-90 sounding - gritty when you push it and shimmery when you dial it back a little.

Harmonic designs Vp-90.
Just got a set of these a few weeks ago. So far they are outstanding. I like them better than the Lollar p-90s |

Which Lollars did you have? What do you like better about the Harmonics?

My set of original 1955 soaps that are in my 2001 R6! Very nice due to the weak magnets and produce a really hollow, old school tone that can get nasty on you in a heartbeat when you dig in. Paired with my '59 5E3 Deluxe, it's tonal Nirvana!

Low output Gibson's on a '53 Les Paul and Lindy Fralin's with the Alnico Pole Pieces (rather than screws) on a L5 MIJ Univox -10% neck, standard bridge. Smooth, sweet, dynamic. Not for the ham fisted!

I found set of the Vp-90s used so put them in. The HD's seem a bit "Bigger" the Bridge is more usable and the bridge and neck seem to balance better. The Vp-90's seem about 25% quieter as well. I found the Lollars were a bit bright and seemed to miss some of the P-90 grunt. The HD's have all the definition and clarity of the Lollars but with more heft. |

Personally, I like the stock P-90s in my Faded LP DC Special... Plenty of grit and grind on OD, and very nice on clean.
Through my Peavey Triple XXX, if I play with the clean channel gain and master volume, I can get right on the edge where it's sweet and clean with a light pick attack, but raunchy when I dig in. Kicking in either gain channel (one has a classic overdriven rock voice, the other has a modern high-gain metal voice) really puts me over the top. I like my Faded SG with GFS Mean 90s installed, too, it's got the same qualities as the LP DC Special.... |

Any of you played P-100's? How do they compare to P-90's? Does the P-100's have more bark than P-90's?

I like all the Duncan P90's I've tried (Custom bridge, Hot and Vintage Neck and whatever the heck they put in the bridge of the CU22 Soapy). Sound great dirty, but clean up well too, IMO. I've tried Lollar and Fralin P90's and was unimpressed (smaller sample size for those pickups though, so I'm reserving judgment).

I've got one P90 guitar and it started off with Vintage Vibe Guitars P90s, which sounded great, but I couldn't take the noise, so I tried a set of DiMarzio noiseless P90s - didn't like them at all - too fat, muddy, inarticulate. Then I tried the Harmonic Design VP90s and they were great as well, but the noise got to me again.
By chance, I heard about some noiseless P90s custom made by Kent Armstrong, and after trying them out, I got a custom set of 3. They are the sweetest P90s I've personally heard/played and NO NOISE! Beautiful cleans and very vocal like OD tones.
