Mic for general mix, recording practice sessions

What's a good mic for recording practice sessions in a small space. I practice with a bass player, keyboard player, 2 acoustics and vocals in a small studio room. I just bought a Tascam DP01FX/CD and I've made a few recordings using a pair of AKG C3000's mounted on a stereo bar. What's a better micing option for this situation?

Is one mic better than 2?

Stereo mic like AT 825 is cool for no brainer XY live recordings.

I also bought a pair of AKG Perception 100 cardioids for $ 69 each brand new in the box on eBay.

Sounds great on acoustic, voice and even kick drum if not placed too close. Present, not too much woofy proximity effect.

Absolutely fantastic mics for the money.

Not trying to get a pro sound, but just to capture the moment with a 3 piece jam band, I was using 2 SM57s hanging from the rafters spread wide in a basement we were jamming in, and it sounded surprisingly good.

The 3000's are probably fine.

It's 2 mics in a room, for demos. Why waste money?

Concentrate on getting them in the right place and let 'er roll.

Stereo bar is fine - look into ORTF positioning.

+1! Can't tell you how many times I see wasted mics just because people are only familiar with cardioid mode. Not saying that's the case, but I recently saw a setup with 5 cardioid LDC's in a room to capture a group and a few individual singers. I suggested 1 maybe 2 cardioid's for 'leads' and 1 omni for the 'group'. Saves a buck...saves mixing trouble...most likely better result.

Omni it up!

get an XY mic, or just get two condenser mics and spread them apart.
