Best way to take knobs off a pedal?

Got some knobs that are hard to get off a pedal.

Shoelace or string. Shoelaces always worked well for me.

pull really hard or use a screwdriver if they have those little screws in them.

As long as the pots are bolted to the chassis and not just sticking through holes attached to the PCB, you can pull on them as hard as you need to to get them off without worrying about breaking anything.

If shoelaces don't work, wrap a screwdriver in a soft cloth and pry it up from underneath. Be gentle, be gentle.

I do something similar. Wrap the knob in cloth or paper towel and use 'long nose' channel locks set to give a good snug grip but not enough to mark the finish on the knob. Works like a charm everytime!

I just broke a pot off my pcb (carvin x100b), b/c some jackass glued the knob on the shaft. Spent the better part of a day trying to find the right 1Meg push/pull pot to replace it.

Was gonna suggest spoons myself, and chip in that my first guitar needed a pot changing when I figured that nothing would get broken if I pulled hard... The pot shaft came out with the knob, leaving the casing in the guitar...

On the new Rats, the knobs are VERY hard to get off. If you just pull really hard on the knobs, or use a lever to pry them off, the shaft will pull out of the pot and you have to disassemble it to put the shaft back in place.

I use a heat gun to apply some heat to the knob (carefully!) to make it expand and then it can be pulled off without damaging the pot.

regards, Jack

What I've found that works best is using the rubber tipped baby spoons. They are very safe on the finish.
