yet another g12-65 vs. vintage 30 thread!

i just played my first gig since switching out the old usa-made vintage 30s in my 2x12 cabinet for a new pair of g12-65s. (old fender tremolux cab widened out for 12s and converted to open-back, if anyone cares.) what a difference!

i use a '78 2203 marshall master volume head, and have always had to pull way back on the highs and on the volume (small clubs) to keep from killing everybody with loud brittleness.

upon first plugging in with the new speakers at the same settings, my amp sounded almost broken, very dull, weak and quiet. i started twisting knobs, and found to my delight that i could at last bring up the treble, presence, and master volume to the point that my amp could really "breathe", and it was loud, but not too loud, with a very warm and even tone.

the g12-65s have a higher resonance than the v30s (85Hz vs. 75Hz), but the low end was still huge, if anything a little bigger.

i had a blast being able to play with enough volume to work my power tubes a little, without getting my band booted from the club!

i can see a place for the vintage 30s with a dark, creamy amp, but for my bright, "slice-y" marshall, the g12-65s are just the ticket. (i can't wait to hear them once they're broken-in, which everyone says is important, and takes a while, with these speakers.)

The 65's are a different animal than the G12H-30 or gold. They have much more emphasis on midrange while the G12H-30 is more relaxed in the mids. The 65 works really well with the G12H-30 in a 2x12 IMO for this very reason. Bob

I have 3 cabs with the Heritage G12-65s. How do the Gold sound compared to the 65s?

I have one 65 left and I'm thinking about getting a Gold to pair it with.

I have 12-65s, Gold and G12H30

G12H30 - a little more "hifi" extended high

Gold alnico tone and feel, with more edge than the g12h30 or '65

12-65 sweeter, rolled off high end with more mid & low mid punch

I often run the 12-65 with a Scholz or a Gold - good combo. Actually it is good with the g12h30 too.

The Gold I tried was way bright, I would even say brighter than a G12H. I had low end issues with that Gold too (with gain, compressed too much).

I had the Scumback M75/H75 combo in my openback 2x12 for a while and really dig them. I've gone back to my G12-65's now and I may be sticking with them for good. They have the perfect balance of lows, mids and highs for me. They are not too smooth and not too gritty. A little thinner than the Scumbacks but not as bright/thin or woofy as Greenbacks. Very close to the Greenbacks overall with exceptional clarity; great great clean tones. I like them better than Greenbacks me thinks. I recently A/B'd a 4x12 Marshall JVM cab with 25 watters against my OS 2x12 with the Heritage G12-65's and greatly preferred my 2x12 (thank goodness)!.

The G12-65's won't hide sloppy playing due to their clarity. I'm hearing more mistakes and sloppyness than I was even playing through the Scumbacks.

I've tried a tone of speakers and I've pretty much decided I don't like mixing speakers too much (except the Scumback H75/M75-HP's). I like the pair of G12-65's better than mixing a G12-65 with any other speaker. YMMV.

sorry for being slightly OT, but I'm also trying out some G12-65s v. the Scumback M75/H75 mix. That scumback mix is interesting, because it seems to fall in a similar tonal area as the G12-65s, but yet is different - louder, very fat, maybe a tad more high end.

anyway, if you like the G12-65s i'd recommend giving that mix a listen as well. certainly no clear winner, but it might be up your alley...

I prefer V30s for many reasons.

Put the 65s into a front loaded cab to bring out a little more edge. I use these AND V30s (in separate cabs) and love the midrange punch and detail I get from this setup.

I seem to prefer midrangy speakers.

Zombie thread

But yeah I am interested in this difference, my current amp puts out a LOT of treble, I can't have the treble any close to noon or it sounds shrill - I figured switching over to the G12-65's would probably compensate for that.. I might just order a pair.

Interesting, we did a run of "USA built" V30's?

whoa, this is a zombie thread!

the V30s were from years before you guys ever started making the chinese versions. oh, wait, i meant "british-made"

(oh, and still digging the 65s this many years later. they're just right for sizzly 2203/2204 marshalls. my understanding is that these were originally designed for 'em, so that makes sense.)
