Tubes for Fender; Marshall

What New Production tubes would you recommended in the toneshaping positions (eg. first two toneshaping tubes) of:

a) a Fender to get a "sizzling tele lead sound"

b) an early era JTM or Plexi Marshall for a vintage/classic rock tone

Also, do you have a recommended favorite tube for the PI position of these classic amps?

I'm assuming that the field is wide open since you didn't list restrictions.

a) RCA 12AX7A
b) Mullard ECC83 (or Brimar CV4004)

These are the tubes used in the original amps.

For Fenders, an RCA 12aT7 or Mullard CV4024 in the PI position.
For Marshalls, Mullard ECC83.

It is hard to get amazing tone with most of the new tubes. I think I would go with Mike's recommendation of vintage tubes. The RCA & Mullards are amazing.

Is this for the Heartbreaker?

My choice for new production stuff is JJ. I also like the Tung Sol 12ax7 reissue tubes for gain.

Most tones that we think of come from the power tubes on classic Marshalls and Fenders. So it will be hard to get both tones out of one amp. Depends on which is more important to you, cleans or crunch. If its cleans 6v6's or 6l6. If its crunch EL34's work great. These are just general guidelines though.

It usually helps to know that up front.

Tung Sol Reissue 12aX7s for both.

BlueStrat - If you reread my initial post, you will find the words in capital letters.

How do the newpro Tungsols compare to the newpro Mullard and JJ803's?

Thanks !

A Chinese as these are hotter

B definitely Shuguang, they sound better than Mullards IMO in old Marshalls and are also high output.

My bad! "Reading is fundamental".

They're all good. The Tung Sols are the least microphonic of the bunch, but the others should be fine in vintage style (not high gain) amps.

Since picking tubes for people is like buying clothes for someone you've never met, I recommend trying a variety and use your ears to decide. You can use whichever ones you like least in the less important sockets.
