The Grosh that didn't get away!!

Ok, this may enter rant territory so beware! First things first:

so:

Ok this is a rant not an ad so hence it's here and not in the emporium. I've got entirely too many guitars and need to turn a few. I list this wonderful guitar because of its price to quality ratio should make it easy to sell. I start the ebay ad at $1650. Also put the link on the emporium. This guitar is a stat monster! can't compare to any production Fender, I don't even think regular Custom Shops can hold their own, IMHO, I think this Grosh would be on the level of masterbuilts. Comparisons are'nt really fair, except to say this Grosh RC is the best sounding and playing Strat type guitar I have ever laid hands on. The build quality is Impeccable!! I thought Grosh's would have enough name recognition and reputation that surely my axe would draw at least $1650, really should'nt even sell for that cheap. Well 6 listings at 7 days each, 1 1/2 months worth of listing fees(including a gallery featered at an extra whopping $24 a whack) and NOTHING. No bites, no nibbles, hardly any watchers, good ad, good pic's, 211 100% postive feedbacks. have sold close to 60 guitars on the bay and never had to relist more than a couple of times. Why this vast indefference on the BEST guitar I have owned or tried to sell? Are telling me, guitar buying public, that $1650 is too much to ask for this gem? huh?? Well, I could get going here but long story short, I concluded that maybe I'm not supposed to sell this guitar and therefore I won't have to start a 'the one that got away' thread.

Grosh RC's are the best "Strat" out there. They were doing really well until our little national financial crunch. One with a cracked finish did so well on Ebay that I decided to list mine in order to go to a different model. Mine had more options and only one little "ping" - but it only got up to $1425.00. I couldn't gripe because I bought it mint for $1300 - but from all previous auctions it seemed like it should have hit $1550.

Right now I'd love to get a VT with humbuckers.

I would have taken it, but for the 7.25" radius.

That was my problem too. I love the looks of this one.

I'm sure the radius is part of the reason, another reason is the poor gear market right now (I've gotten some amazing deals), the other reason is the poor brand recognition of Grosh guitars. Off the bat, I would have said that your original asking price was too much. Starting with an asking price at the minimum of what you expect is an auction strategy that doesn't often work. It might be better to start at a price slightly lower than what you want (say $1,400) and hope to get bidders to bid each other up.

I sold six Suhr guitars on ebay two months ago. They are equivalent to Grosh guitars in quality and price (and have a better brand recognition) and I don't think I cleared more than $1,600 on any of them (with a few selling in the $1,400 range). They were all in mint/unused condition.

Actually $1650 is a little lower than I want. I'd cry if it went for $14 or 15 hundred. Funny I find no problems with a 7 1/4 radius. The frets are perfect size where you can bend with no dead spots and wail freely.
Now I was getting some thumb soreness which I attributied to the wider neck and the med/large roundback carve. This is what promted me to unload this one. But more recently when picking on the Grosh my hand felt great, I must've had some temporary thumb soreness. maybe from my other hobby of playing ice hockey... (yuppers, here in Okieland we play ice hockey!!!)

oh, I do wish I had some disposable income to take advantage of this economic downturn and jump on some good deals.
I do notice Fender Custom Shops are increasing in used prices.
a few years ago I bought a CS '69 for around $1300(keeper), a mint cond CS Classic Players for are $900 (sold for about $1300)
those prices are no more.
shoot it wasn't but a few years ago you could buy late '70's strats for the $1k range.. no longer...
I bought one of my favorite guitars, a light ash 79 hardtail for $700 on ebay in 04!! The guitar is the bomb, hope to never sell .

oh crap I almost forgot the statement in the original post about pics so here's my wonderful '79 and yes it's about 7.2 lbs if you can believe that from CBS in '79!!

with two guitars of mine (which i have had for over 12 years now) it took about 2-3 years to finally get used to their respective necks: one a jazz box with a wider and shallower neck carve than ususal and one Warmoth Tele with their boatneck carve (full and deep). i am now very comfortable with both and very glad that i did bite it through and kept them, both great guitars that i don't want to miss. my current gripe is with my Hamer Monaco which has a rather D-shaped neck which i am not used to at all - but again, it's a great sounding guitar and i will keep on fighting til my hand adjusts. Hamer does not offer it with a different neck so i'm stuck. i got it for a good price but would not be able to replace it with something similar- it's a rather unique guitar. if all fails i can have my luthier shave the neck to a C carve and be done.
just sayin'.... maybe you oughta give it some more time ?

times are tough and there is no shortage of quality guitars and amps on both the emporium, here, and ebay...still, I was a little surprised to see that your guitar didn't sell....

you know gitman, thats the same situation as mine and I think I've come to the same conclusion. This Grosh sounds so good that I will work at getting used to the large neck. I notice I have to play it differently and I can't really continue a fast run down to the lower E and A strings. My hand runs out of room. I also thought the same thing, that maybe I can get the corners of the C shaved down to turn it into more of a V shaped. I even thought about sending back to Don Grosh. Of course all that would require something I don't have extra right now and that's money. But to sell this one at $1500 or so. and get a similar Grosh with a friendlier neck carve from Don with premium swamp ash like this would cost more like $2800 I believe. What do I sell though??? does anyone want to buy a mint condition 02 PRS SC 10top birds?? (admin, this iis not an ad, just thinking our loud) but man I've noticed Single Cuts don't sell so good either lately; $1800 tops.

IMO, a little pricy for the condition, they go for close to what you listed it for here and on eBay in mint condition. You also had yours listed when a few others were on there as well, some in better condition and more preferable specs...

It's a buyers market now, bottom line. What its worth to you is not what its worth to the general public. Has nothing to do with how great a guitar it is.. (looks awesome). Also certain things like the radius obviously are hurting the sale... IMO.

Hang on to it for a while or lower the price are two options.

Nice guitar.

good luck
