If you don't mind going used, the old two knob FX-55 Distortion can sound pretty good. My friend uses one and it sounds great in his rig. I picked on up for about $20, and in my rig, it sounded good for leads or for bridge pup rhythm. But it had too much low end to do rhythm work on any other pickup.

Man, I was looking to see if anyone would mention this. Right on with your description, too. Separate bass and treble controls are sensitive and useful in several settings. I don't use it much anymore, but I like to know it's on the shelf!

FX55C Supra I do think is better than the B version. Bright, doesn't do neutral tone quite, clear but boring, can be a good boost.
FX56B Super American Metal, "compressed" but otherwise good sound, can be great for leads adding a ton of gain and smoothing off the high end at the same time. Can have tons of bass. The classic fuzz is like a Muff if Boss made it.

I've got one myself, my first fuzz, and this quote is a dead-on description of the pedal!

I have the FX40-B EQ.. picked it up for $25, seems to do what it's supposed to.. though I haven't had it on my board for a while.
