I've got one. I liked it pretty well stock, but after upgrading the resistors, caps and tubes it really came to life. I like Eminence speakers but some really like the Weber as a replacement.

Had one for a few years. LOUD. Had a weird rattle that took a while to sort out...reverb tank banged out. Needs a pedal to add some grit though as the MOD switch is sutle, doesn't add as much distortion and sustain as one may be led to believe. Also...and not to you necessarily...this amp is not a reissue.

I haven't played this amp, though I do like the '90s 2x10 '63 Vibroverb RI (good idea to upgrade the speakers). Sorry if OT... Link: http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/vibroverb_63ri.html

Yeah, I have one 64 Vibroverb reissue and I put a JBL D130 in it and WOW!!! The amp is so articulate now great for jazz or blues...

...what'cha mean?
...and, I agree, the current Vibroverb isn't even really a "reissue" but is actually more like a "factory-made" reincarnation of a Cesar Diaz "hack-job" for SRV.

I had a 64 Vibroverb and I liked the tone but mine had a odd sound to the reverb that I could never get to go away, one day I tried it next to a DRRI and liked the DRRI more so I sold it and bought the DRRI. I would like to try another one and see if mine was just an exeption.

You got it. I tried, in my first post, to be emphatic w/o being too overbearing...the '64 Vibroverb Custom Fender makes now is not a reissue. The original didn't have the MOD switch capability plus it didn't have the option of using either a s/s recitifier or a tube rectifier. Thus it didn't have variable wattage...well if variable means either 40 watts or 50 watts. Nah, it's not a reissue in the least but someone already claims it is in the thread...after I said it's not. Just don't want to mislead anyone thinking it's gonna be like that original Vibroverb they may have tried or heard.

It's a serious amp. That's why I bought it. I did a gig with one of Prince's ex keyboard players for New Years a few years ago, and I tried this amp. I bought it after that. The ONLY thing I would change, is to add a midrange control to this amp. Why Fender didn't put a midrange control on this is baffling! But it can be easily added. Most people won't try this amp, because most stores don't carry it, the high cost, or because they feel that a 15" speaker won't work for them. But trust me...it's a killer amp. BTW, I've owned over 20 Fender SF and BF vintage amps....this amp is their equal. Jon.

I have one and i love it... it's been a bit of a challenge to get it just right and i dont think that im quite there yet... i changed the stock tubes out for NOS JAN 7581A's and RCA 12AX7's, which made a massive difference, not at bedroom levels but cranked!! I also had all the caps and resistors changed to Mallory's (caps) and some of the values changed to match that of the original, i had the diaz mod taken out of the circuit but i've left the rectifier switch as I may change my mind on that one.. currently use NOS JAN Philips 5AR4...
I had the "equal weighting" mod done where by the normal channel runs thru the vibrato channel as well... but i'm having that reversed and am going to take out the tube in V1 and see how that sounds... My weber NEO15 arrives this week so that will go in over the weekend... the upshot is that i do love this amp but i'm playing with it to try to find my own voice with it... it's fun hunting around for things and ways to alter the basic tone to try to find your own sound... |
