I played an original '64 for several years - GREAT amp - as long as you can dime it, or at least get it up past 3:00. It's a loud sucker, for sure, at that volume setting, but the tone drips out of it, at that level. Below that, it it tight and clean, and will not break up - no matter what. If you need some break-up, I'd highly recommend an attenuator or pedals, because it won't let go of that clean tone, until it hits ear-bleed level. The cleans are VERY sweet, FWIW, but sometimes you need some grit, too. It was very articulate, although at the highest volume, with a Les Paul, the humbuckers could get a little muddy, if everything was dimed. With the stock speakers that were in it at that time, it was well into the "speaker breakup" zone, and I blew a couple of speakers trying to keep up with the Marshalls.
I've not tried the reissues, so I can't speak to them, but the original amp was sweet!

I have a '64 Vibroverb Custom and will never sell it. For me, it is the perfect tone just the way it is. The 15" speaker is so responsive and lush that is seems almost alive.

ps. I hear you, Peppy. I think Fender confused everything by putting the "'64" in front of the name. I guess the "Custom" part of the name is meant to set it apart from the reissue crowd.

Horse dead...

It's not called the '64 RI it's called the "CUSTOM"!

And who cares if it's not a dead nuts replica? Really! It's a fine amp with some useful features added. God forbid! I had one and loved it! Wishing I still had it!

Definitlely not just another RI, but something incredibly well made and useful to musicians...maybe not historians. LOL!
