Dickey Betts' Soldano

One of my two or three favorite tones has been Dickey Betts' early to mid '90s tone with the Allman Bros., especially on the official live releases. I always assumed that he did most of those shows with Marshalls through JBL speakers, as that's the "famous" Dickey rig. However, by the magic of youtube, I've found that he apparently relied much more on the Soldano SLO during this period.

Check this youtube vid and marvel at his tone (though they flub some of the harmony lines at the end):

So I'm thinking all those great tones on An Evening . . . First Set (which I think is Dickey's high water mark in the Allmans) come from the Soldano.

Does anyone know how he set this beast up? I'm guessing he played on the normal channel, but other than that, does anyone know? He appears to be using the JBL-loaded cab.

The main reason is that the lower-priced offerings in Soldano's line mimic one or another channel of the SLO. I'm guessing that one could get Dickey's tone here with a reverb-o-sonic, a Les Paul, and a delay turned way down. Anyone know?

Nothing will get that "true" SLO tone but an SLO. I played out for many years with the Reverb O Sonic, and tried everything else (but the SLO) Soldano offers. I was chasing that Warren Haynes SLO tone without spending 3K$.

Can't give you any of the info you requested but I imagine Dickey was loving Warren's sound and got one with the "Warren Haynes mod".

It was a weird time for Dickey, aside from personal demons, he was playing different gear every night (I saw A LOT of shows from that era). He was pissed off at Gibson, and stopped playing his goldtop (went to a PRS McCarty or an old Strat). I went to a few consecutive shows at the Beacon one year, and he was playing through the SLO, then a Marshall, then he had both hooked up. Warren was doing the same thing too, Soldano SLO, Marshall, Diaz and Engel.

Was there a "Warren Haynes mod" that long ago? Dickey's big on stock amps, and his tone is not bass-heavy like Warren's. I figure the brightness come from the JBLs.

Thumbs up

No doubt Warren had an influence over Dickey during this Period. Dickey even had a little endorsement deal with PRS for a while. This is the very same time I fell in love with the band. I saw them throughout the NYC Metro area many times from Atlantic City to Broadway in Manhattan. To say these two had a chemistry is putting it extremely lightly. They were the shit in the early 90's!Warren's slide is so amazing in this video.........did the ABB need another great slide player?

I think the main reason Dickey doesn't use the SLO's anymore is because he doesn't play venues where the 100w is suitable anymore. They really don't make a 50w viable option so he grabs the old tried and true 50 w plexi.

i heartily agree with buellwisner, here is a perfect example, Warren has the absolute killer playing, but Dickey has a tone to die for:

note neither of them use the bridge pup alone.

Dang..........does it get any better then that!!?

I wonder what Warren did with that LP? He used it all through the 90's and then it just disappeared. Never even mentions it in interviews.

There has been a "Warren mod" ever since he started using them with the Allmans. It gives a better tone at lower preamp gain levels.

Wrong Soldano amp I guess. If you had used a Hot Rod 50+ or 100+, you would have had the tone. I used an HR50+ for many years and when I went and saw Mule live, Warren had the same basic tone. At least 95+% there.

It's a back up now. When Warren purchased the 2002 R8 that he plays (the flame top), this one became a back up. If you watch the deepest end video, he breaks a string during a song and they stop the song and switches back to this guitar. The very next song, he's back on the 02 R8.

You could also go with an Avenger (SLO lead channel only).

Can you get in the ballpark of the Allmans clip I posted with a HR50+?

Neat. So was Dickey's Soldano modded in the same way?
