Pro Reverb questions
I'm in the market for a somewhat lighter super reverb. On paper and from what I've read the Pro seems to be a good compromise. I know there's nothing like those four 10's moving all that air but as long as I can still get a really great clean tone I'll be happy.
What are your thoughts on the master/non-master versions? Most people seem to prefer the non-master version but is there really a big difference in sound? They moved over to master volumes in '77, is that right? I've also heard some people complain about the transformer in some of the later models. When did they start producing them with the different output transformer? Is it really as bad as some people make it out to be? I have a local guy offering me a '74. I'm still waiting to hear back from him on particulars but as long his price is reasonable I'll probably go check it out. Any other amps I should check out? I don't necessarily want a totally clean amp. Think the first stage of breakup on an AC30 or saturation you get at max volume on a super reverb... kind of that range of gain. I'm thinking maybe a vibrolux would also sound good. I found a local shop with one of the new classic series but I haven't had a chance to go play it yet. |

Looks like he wants $800. It's a non-master but the speakers have been replaced. Seems a little steep to me. Even higher than ebay prices

They are killer amps. By the mid-70's, they did start changing them a bit from blackface specs, but still a great amp and easy to tweak. I'd look at the Fender Field Guide to get an idea of what changes were made by 74. If it's in really good shape, I think $800 ain't all that bad, but you might be able to talk him down a bit.

I'd rather have a '74 than a '69.
The first round of changes from blackface were the ugly ones. By '74 they had undone a lot of the worst bugaboos of the first round of silverfaces. I would offer him $700.

Honestly $800.00 is high around these parts. (I'm in E. TN) Mid '70s you should be able to find not much over $500.00 if you're a little patient.
Groovey Records '66 is a whole 'nother ball of wax, as the mid '60s command quite a premium for the black face stuff, even around here, though occasionally you can find a real deal. It kills me thinking how many of those black face amps I've passed up over the years when they were going for peanuts... |

Pro Reverb is high on my GAS list. The 40 watt version, not the ultralinear 70 watter of the mid late 70s. Up here, 800 is a reasonable price. SF is fine by me. Some of the best later Fender amps I've played have come from the '70 - '72 time. They seem to go forever, and have such a fine sound.

if it needs nothing and is ready to gig,$800.00 is a solid deal you won't regret down the road.there's lots of $500.00 amps around but they need 2-$300.00 worth of tubes/work.

Maybe where you're at...but not here...hmmm, maybe I should start turning these things over if you're all willing to give that kind of money.
Place your orders! I'll locate. |

My buddy's '65 is killer. I sold my '65 Super Reverb to a different friend for $1200, (busted up cab and non-original speakers). He got $1900 for it. $800 for a blackface is a steal. $800 for a Silverface is about right for a minty one.

I have a 1970 Pro I paid $600 for two years ago. Looks average - sounds fantastic. A vibrolux (even a silverface) is gonna' run a lot more than that. You can't go wrong with either one (I've owned both). If weight is an issue, and you can live without reverb and vibrato (but how?) maybe you should check out a R.I. Bassman. Four tens and probably 20 lbs. lighter than a Super Reverb. They sound great too. A silverface Pro is probably your best "bang for your buck" Fender amp though. For 800.00 bucks it should be in excellent condition cosmetically and tone-wise. Good luck and happy hunting.
