Compressor for jazz tone ?

which do you guys reckon gives that warm , smooth and fat jazz tone and is also a true bypass unit.

joseph luc and jack zucker, id like to read about which you list here.

no pedals like mxr dynacomp or boss cs3 please, easily the worst pedals of this kind i have ever tried.

The CPR is a great comp, it knocked a Keeley off my board way back, although was ultimately replaced by the BJF Pale Green. I find the PGC to be quieter and more versatile thanks to the "body" tone control. For the price, the CPR is unbeatable in my book.

Diamond Comp is nice for this because the EQ knobs allows you to shift the focus from bright to dark. Just roll it a little bit to the dark side and everything is waaay smooth and fat. Add compression as you see fit. Gives you some really nice pop and attack on your picked notes.

I don't think this is TB but check out the Visual Sound Route 66 compressor. Very transparent and smooth compressor imo.

The archtop preset simulation in my Boss EQ-20 has impressed many folks that have heard me use it. And I use it with a Les Paul! You can find it in the manual and imitate it nicely with most graphical EQs

I know this is not what you are looking for, but I just got back from NGW's Jazz Summit, several pro players includind Scofield. All used some pedals (mostly reverb & delay), none used a compressor. Just sayin.

I think you can't go wrong with just about any opto-compressor. Two that stick out in my mind for a warm tone are the Frantone Sputnik and the Demeter Compulator. YMMV!

For good reason - Jazz is all about dynamics; limiting the dynamics with a stomp is not really a sound traditionally associated with Jazz guitar playing, at least not in the way we associate compressed tones with genres like Country and Funk. It doesn't mean you shouldn't use one though.

i would seriously consider the barber tone press. it's the most transparent, musical sounding compressor that i've tried. it's a pedal that you can leave on all of the time and still have a lot of dynamics happening.

I like a nice reverb myself, but have no interest in delay at all. I thought a quality compressor would help to give that rounded jazz tone, perhaps I am wrong on this ?

I can get really close with a Keeley 4-knob. It take me time to dial it in right, though.

Are you sure what you are after is compression and not a tone knob rolled back to just the right sweet spot so the shimmering highs still come through and the lows are fattened up thick?
Compressors do great things with single coils, but can rob tone from HBs as HBs are already flatter by nature in attack. They tend to deaden the attack and so can the tone knob. Like was said, a compressor will kill your dynamics, but the tone rolled back won't.
