Good gear with a bad reputation

I love my Epiphone Valve Jr. With some NOS tubes and running it into a good speaker cabinet the tone is very good. But, its still WAY too loud to give up the goods at bedroom levels.

I used to have a THD Hot Plate when I used 100 watt heads and huge cabinets but living in an apartment type dwelling I downsized to a Princeton Reverb and the Epi so the $300.00 Hotplate wasn't needed.

I went to the local guitar shop and saw a Scholz Power Soak for $40.00.

I took a chance, figured I only paid $50.00 for the Epi amp, if it goes up in a blaze of glory it would be prety cool to see!

Since the Epi only needs to come down a few dbs to be tamed the Power Soak is doing a great job. When I plug a Rangemaster Clone in front of it its maybe the best bedroom level tube tone I've heard.

I was afraid to try the Power Soak due to its rep but its not bad at all.

Additionaly, the thing didn't even get warm!! It must scough at the wimpy 5 watts its seeing. I'm using good cable as well, that might help.

So, I'm just here to give the old Power Soak a little props. Its not going to compete with the newer crop of attenuators but its WAY better than I expected.

Silver Face Fender UL amp, Pro and Super Reverb....maybe not my fist Choice for Sabbath...but they sound great, killer blues n stones amp...hit iw with a fuzz face or rat and they rock .

G1275 celestions. Used to paly a lot of Gilmourish stuff and they sounded killer with a lot of effects and Delay

My lowly Squier '51 gets as much play time as my Gibby Standard, Ame. Strat, etc. Granted, I tried a lot of duds when I was demoing them, but I found one that just has undeniable mojo

I have been playing a 70's LP deluxe that is a fantastic guitar. Heavy, yes, but it sounds really really good.

Also I am quite fond of my DL4.

79 strat into a hiwatt lead 20 head... Both items scoffed at by purists, yet some of the 'purist' tones I've yet to hear. Wouldn't trade this setup for anything!

Mesa Boogies

the Mark series (and related) are great amps . . . but he got too successful, and too metal, and nothing like popularity to get the ire of the Bootiquees up.

Marshall Powerbrake. I use it for my modded Epi VJr. People say it kills tone but that amp is so bright that a little loss of high end gives me just the right amount of chime at bedroom levels. I use it for all my EL-84 amps!
