Goodsell Super 7

Really digging this one so far - it's gritty and a little "swampy" for me some times, but the tones harken back to real earthy, older, rawer sound (no where to hide . This amp is VERY touch sensitive and the cleans, grit and crunch are very distinct and different.
I am wondering if a different speaker (than the custom built one from Goodsell) might tame a little bit of the raw breakup and smooth out the crunch just a bit. I can get pretty much anywhere I want (except for higher gain) with guitar (LP, Tele or Strat) -> cable -> amp and using the volume/tone of the guitars or amp.
I'm thinking sometype of a Scumback would be killer, but the cab is very small and tight (the OT is about 1" or less from the back of the magnet on the speaker) and I'm not sure what replacement might fit.
Anyone try different speakers in this puppy?
It's also the loudest/fullest 2 watts AND 7 watts I've ever heard. I'd like to think cranked on 7 watts using your guitar volume would be enough for a gig. Maybe not...

I had richard make the speaker jack unpluggable on mine instead of hardwiring it in (maybe everyones is like this not sure). I've run it through a 2x12 with celestion blues and i have a 2x12 with vintage 30's ive yet to try it through. I'll post back with tone comparisons but i remember really liking the blues. i really dont know how you could fit any other speaker in the cab though.... there is NO extra space back there

I've heard a few S17's over the years and they are very different sounding depending on the speaker. The Greenbacks are...well, more aggresive. My amp sounds very different than that. More jangle and vox like...but that is a 2x10 with the rajun and copperhead.

Hmmm... I guess I hate to "waste" the internal speaker/cab config by running it into an external cab. But, I did run it into my Valvetech cab for testing (old assed alnico speaker) and it was sublime. Too bad it doesn't have taps for internal AND an external speaker like the Gries 5. That would be sick.
I'm starting to think I bought the wrong "right" amp for me
Meaning, maybe the Super 17 (mark 3 or possibly even mark 2) head would be the end all amp to go with a killer cab. But thinking about selling my 3 current amps to afford one amazing rig makes me a little nauseous considering the current resale market (1)

All of the new 2/7s have ext spkr jacks and enough clearance in back to use most cool speakers... the earlier ones were built on Hammond organ chassis (like so many initial runs in the past) and I was stuck with that layout - only a handful lightweight speakers, like the 12" RG10 and the Jensen P12Q would fit. The new ones are getting RGM (Greenback spec) ceramics, and the blue will fit if you want to spend that kind of money...

FWIW... the 2/7 now comes as a head, also...

Thanks for the info Richard. This really is a killer amp and I knew going into it that it was prototype (which is kind of neat in and of itself). I might have to get a second one
