Brownface Fender cleans?

I know the browns sit between the tweeds and blackfaces in terms of OD sounds. How do they fare with the clean sounds? Can you get anything remotely like the BF sparkle? I'm looking to buy a brownface kit but I do love good cleans on an amp as well as some snarky OD

Here's a Brownface Concert doing some cleans - even with Humbuckers, it's getting pretty bell sounds.

And here's a Brownface Princeton, with a 12-string Starfire, same type of 'buckers, both demos direct guitar to amp, that's it:

Actually both might have a bit of onboard trem engaged there but you get the idea. Brownfaces are creamier than Blackfaces, but have very enchanting cleans - not as raw as a tweed, and not mud or spikey like others.

That 12er sounds INCREDIBLE.

And your clip pretty accurately demonstrates the same cleans I get from my '64 6G2. What speaker do you have in yours? I have a Kendrick Blackframe 10 and love it - really opened up the overall sound vs. the stock Oxford.

My '62 Bassman(yup, it has a brown faceplate..) has some of the
best cleans I've ever heard.

[To my ears] it has a slight upper mid bump to it that's shimmery .
Add the presence control [to taste] and it rings like a bell.

Bass treble and Presence controls are all that's needed with that amp-
it's voiced, perfect.

I'm about ready to pop for a Weber 6G13-A kit as they have a 10% off sale 'til the end of the month (orders over $199). I was checking schematics at the Fender Field Guide and it looks like you could make any number of amps from that chassis. Now I'm torn between making a 4x10 Concert out of it or a 1x15 Vibrosonic. They offer both speaker options for the kit.

I love the 15" sound. I have a Delta Blues 115 right now. But a friend has a 4x10 combo that sounds great, too. Plus Jahn's Concert clip above is yummy! Oh, the indecision!

Too bad we really couldn't get my '64 Blackface Concert cranked up too much at Ranger's place...

What surprised me about your amp was how light it was. That's why I'm not too concerned about building a 4x10. Your Concert is way lighter than Shannon's Super Reverb was.

The brown Super is to die for IMHO.

I shoehorned a 12" Celestion Blue in my '64 6G2. Yeah I'm evil like that. Warning - it won't fit "straight" - mounting should either be rotated or a new baffle should be off center to make it fit.

Maybe due to the lack of all the extra stuff having to do with a reverb circuit... maybe...

That's kind of what I was thinking too, but that littel tank and transformer don't weigh all that much. I'd guess the Super Reverb has bigger a PT and/or OT too.

Looks like it's the same basic circuit, too. Weber doen't offer a 2x10 cab for this kit though. They do have a 2x12 offering. Maybe "the amp that never existed"

I've got the Vibrasonic and it's a great sound. The JBL gives it more volume than the Super or Concert, it has a little more treble as well, which helps it to cut in a band situation (does fine against 50w Marshalls even though it's only rated at 35w). It is kind of heavy with that speaker. I think supers are heavier because of the OT, the reverb tank, the reverb circuit, Utah or CTS speakers heavier than Jensen, MDF baffle etc...

drbob1, one of the 15" options Weber offers is their California speaker with either paper or aluminum dust cap. These are supposed to be fairly JBL-like. You think the aluminum cap is a good way to go in this circuit? Seems like that would be closer to your JBL than using a paper dust cap.
