Hot Licks Dvds

Just looking for some first hand reviews of the Hot Licks series of DVD's. Namely the Brian Setzer and Danny Gatton titles!

Any other suggestions for getting some good rockabilly/redneck jazz schooling is appreciated:BEER

I have the Setzer disc, and it is great. Don't have the Gatton one, but man I would buy that one just to see Danny play. What a talent.

Thanks! What's the disc like? A lot of performance, or a lot of instruction. Are you learning HIS riffs, or just techniques?

He performs a couple of tunes, but it is mostly instructional stuff, and the book is pretty full of transcriptions of stuff he does on the vid. he goes over gear some, and how he gets his sound also.

I have both of the Danny Gatton DVDs' "Telemaster" and "Strictly Rhythm Guitar". Both are fantastic instructional tools. He explains everything throughly, although "Telemaster" is a little over my head....but it is amazing to watch! I highly recommend both!

Telemaster is great. If I can lift 4 or 5 licks from Danny, I'll be ecstatic. What a MONSTER. I've been previewing various instructional videos on Netflix, and it's been a blast. They don't send the TAB books, but it's pretty easy to get the basics of each lick if you pay attention. If a video has some good info, I go out and buy it. So far my favorites have been the Danny Gatton stuff, Joe Pass "The Blue Side of Jazz" , all Paul Gilbert's stuff (the "Get Out of My Yard" DVD is super fun and useful), Pat Martino "Creative Force", and Carl Verheyen "Intervallic Rock". I've got Setzer, Ronnie Earl, and Johnny Hiland on the way!

I borrowed the Johnny Hiland and the Scotty Anderson discs a few months ago from Netflix. Both were entertaining glimpses into their technique, and fun to watch several times....but they were pretty poor as instruction. The Hiland was slightly better as he organized his thoughts and was more articulate in describing what his hands do.

I have the Brent Mason and Setzer coming next. Maybe I'll post reviews after watching.

I like the Hiland...I can see learning from that, if you can learn from DVDs.

I have the Joe Pass and Tal Farlow, I'd say the same of those.

I watched my Setzer tape (I have it on VHS) last night due to your question, and he opens with a performance, then shows you what he is doing step by step, with the examples posted to coordinate with the booklet. He includes the solo in his explaination.

He then does another tune which is more of a boogie type blues. He then adds tons of chordal subs and plays it like a very lush jazz blues. Though he does not go into any explaination of the subs, the booklet has all the chords graphed out. He talks gear, which is very minimal. Plays Rock this town, and then plays a great chord melody version of Sleepwalk.

He talks about how he switches between pup settings, between rockabilly type picking, rock type single lines, and chordal playing. He mixes all that up constantly so it changes the dynamics quite a bit within any tune. I am reminded again about how much I like his playing.

He looks pretty young in the vid, and it seems like the down period when the SC were played out, but before he did the BSO thing. There is a bunch there, and I learned a couple of things I hadn't noticed before.
