the BEST hard rock neck/bridge humbucker duo!
looking to get some opinions on what you guys believe to be the best neck/bridge humbucker duo for hard rock. we're talking high gain and harmonic squeals galore, yet still articulate (is that even possible?). would your choices change between a lp and a strat?
let's hear it! |

My baseline pickup combination that has been in 90% of my guitars over the past 10 years....
Seymour Duncan JB bridge and 59 neck. I know there are fancier pickups out there, but these are fantastic sounding, yet predictable enough that I know how they're going to react in different kinds of guitars, different wood types, and neck attachment types. My PRS doesn't even have stock pickups in it anymore... I've got a Duncan JB/Jazz combo.

A set of Suhr Aldrich humbuckers. They´re amazing for hard rock.

I'd agree with teh SD selction above. That is what is in my new ESP, and it sounds great. A set of EMG 81's is hard to beat too, for gain, squeals and low noise performance.

Aldrich Humbuckers solve all the problems I have with the typical JB/Jazz and JB/59 combos. So does the Seymour Duncan PATB1 Bridge/PATB Neck combo, but they're more compressed than the Aldrich's.

SO let's rank/discuss
59/JB or Jazz/JB which is better and why? Do tell.

Jazz/JB for me. The 59 just gets too muddy in most guitars I've had it in under higain (at least in terms of tonally balancing with the bridge pickup. When I get the bridge where I want it tonally, the 59N is too muddy). The '59 sounds better clean/kinda dirty and has a bit more personality/juiciness, but for higain stuff, the Jazz usually sounds much better to me.

The firewaters in a LP if you want a pickup that will be articulate and clear, even when you turn your volume knob down and still deliver higain tones.

I used to think '59/JB, but Suhr's Aldrich pickups are much better.

I like the JB/Alnico II Pro set. I have these in both my Les Paul and my Custom 24. Both great sounding pickups.
