a clean boost in the loop will give you a big volume boost without changing preamp gain. a boost in front of the amp will drive the preamp harder; if the preamp is on the clean side, you'll also get a big volume jump; if it's crunchin' already, you'll just get more saturation with little volume increase.

Been doin' an EQ pedal in my Loop for a while now. It's the only way to go if your using a moderate to ton's of gain. The EQ pedal trick is nice because you can boost for a lot more volume and you can bump or cut some freq's for a different lead tone as well.
I'm using a Maxon EQ and Analogman AR20DL. They are a real nice combination. I especially like the Buffered output of the Analogman Delay, it's made all the difference with my tone. Absolutely no loss of tone/signal/clarity. |

A buddy showed be this trick many years ago and I've been using ever since. I've tried both eq's and clean boosts, both work fine; your personal prefernece will determine that end result.
We don't have a sound man in our band, this is how I get the solos out on top of the mix. I currently have a super clean "Trachouse" clean boost. I replaced an MXR Micro-amp because the MXR has a ground issue when using the 9v power supply on my PB and the Trachouse is true-bypass and dead quiet. I've used a boost in the loop on both solid state and tube amps, either way, works great. Good luck! |

(not dis-respecting you , just making sure that the facts are laid down here ) Those of us who play with any type of gainy amp would need to use the volume boost in a loop (POST-preamp) or you get no volume boost.. I have loads of boost pedals but most are useless in front of my amps except for giving extra gain.. Bob's totally correctEric |
