Cover Song Suggestions

One of the bands that I'm in is playing a show in November. It is going to be a longer set than we typically play so we'll need to add some covers. I have some ideas, but I'd like to know what TGP thinks:

Here is a link to our website

Some garage recordings are available to listen to give you an idea of the originals.

We are a 6 piece band with: 2 female singers/frontperson (lead and harmony), acoustic guitarist, electric guitarist, bass, and drums.

I'd be interested in any ideas you might have, but we dont really play heavy music or hard rock, so thoses tyles may not be a good fit.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Do you want songs that will make other musicians think you are cool, or songs that normal people will enjoy?

I'm not really concerned about perceptions of cool. This band is not our primary job, it is for fun.
In my opinion we are there to draw a crowd and keep them there. We've tried some songs that seemed like a good idea or were "flashy", and more often than not those songs get the least amount of positive reaction from an audience.
I'm more concerned with the quality of the song, and I just want songs that sound good.
Thanks for asking!

How bout some Meredith Brooks or Alainis Morisette? Also, an excellent female artist I like is Sarah Kelly.

Might try some of the acoustic/electric Zeppelin stuff.

...you could always do "bobby magee" (joplin)
it gets kinda crazy at the end but you could do your own thing with it.

My $0.02 make a list of all the typical bar band showstopper tunes (from a non musician standpoint) ie. Gimme some Water, I will survive, One Good Reason etc. etc. and DO NOT PLAY ANY OF THESE!!!!

here's why, you are selling your excellent but unknown material and these songs will make your presentation less impressive in comparison because the audience will identify instantly with those songs.

The covers you do should a) be really cool ie. win your audience for being hip b) be really easy to execute so that they don't detract from either the rehearsals or performance c) be sufficiently catchy so that the audience will be able to hum along d) may be a really surprising arrangement like Cardigans doing Black Sabbath or Tori Amos doing Smells Like Teen Spirit (there's 2 good ideas right there).

If you must play a song from the list, make it the encore

Andy

....or of you want to get a little more edgy check out some Patty Smith. Great lyrics and melodies. And speaking of great melodies, anything off of Brandi Carliles "The Story" CD would be great.

BTW, I really like your web site. Who did that for you?

I sent you a my space friends request.

Have a great gig!

Thanks for the kind words. I have no involvement in the website, it is pertty outdated at this point and we are trying to do everything through Myspace.

Bump for more song suggestions.
We've played "Possesion" by Sarah Mclachlan before, so we may do that again.
