Bruce Cockburn

For the last 17 years Bruce has been one of my fav "singer/songwriters" and unique guitarists.

I just recently started getting a feel for playing his tunes accurately; NOT the easiest player to emulate!

His lyrical prowess alone boggles my mind let alone the other great qualities he posseses

One in a million that guy

The first time I really decided to check out Bruce's music was when I saw him on a live concert on the CBC about 4 or 5 years ago or so.

He was playing one of his tunes (not sure which, I can't remember), and they were extending the intro and he was improvising for a bit.

It was his improvising that really got me... it wasn't single-note, bluesy or modal lines like you so often hear. It was coming from more of a folk, finger-picking method. It's hard to really describe, but it was a departure from lead guitar as a single-note instrument and more into a notes-meets-chords kind of thing.

That really drew me in, and I realized how good of a musician and player he was. Really got me inspired. I've got 15 of his albums now, and want to do some music that's very similar.

I just wish I could find a live DVD of him somewhere, specifically of that show.

You're just saying that because he's from Canada..

A couple of people who listened to my CD told me they thought I sounded like Bruce in some ways. I was glad to hear that -- it prompted me to go out and buy a few of his CDs. I'd listened to him (and liked him a lot) but didn't have any of his records. Good, good stuff.

I have been a fan since about 1980. I have virtually all his stuff. Have seen him live 3 times. Always surrounds himself with incredible musicians. I believe he still holds the record for the most Juno awards (Cannuk version of the Grammy).

He did Berklee for a year or two in the 60's and then went on to do a number of acoustic, folky type records before really getting into the electric. Just an all around amazing talent, with a keen eye on the world around him.

Also, there are a couple of books out he had published of some of his earlier work. I have them both, and they are very accurate. Here is a link.

My first intro to Bruce was actually thru Jerry Garcia playing "Waiting for a Miracle" with the Jerry Garcia Band in the early '90's. I've since caught Bruce live a couple times and he's really great to see. He makes me think of a mix of Dylan, Robbie Robertson, and Ry Cooder (or something like that).

Short overview of his playing: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=GK64qc-Mbts

Much like the incredible Richard Thompson, Bruce has distinct voices on electric and acoustic guitar.

I heard that the song "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" was actually written about his father for giving him the last name.

At least he didn't name him Richard.

I didn't realize that he's been around since the 60's. I first heard him in the early 90's and really like his style.

Bruce is a terrific musician, songwriter and guitarist. I saw him twice in Glenside, PA-once solo acoustic and once with a band. Both shows were awesome although I liked the electric band show a bit more. He also has some great vintage guitars and amps and always plays with melody and atmosphere.

God, "Stealing Fire" is such a great album!
I just listened to it again the other night. A great songwriter and humanitarian, and a fine musician to boot!
