Man this is not that easy...

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6996131

Edit:

Another take w/AKG414 and a little different EQ on amp- playing is slop all over

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6996334

Getting better-

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6998698

Trying for a certain sound here and it's just not coming through in the bounce. All of the crunch and kerrang seemed to disappear. Also the reverb and spatial stuff got weird.

Enough excuses- here's my stab at AC/DC HTH. Just the Angus style stuff...I miss the Malcom component of the mix...but alas no Super Bass or Gretsch as of now. No SG either.

Used my newly resuscitated Les Paul custom- 10-52 (part of the problem) and my Metro JTM 45 clone into my attenuator and scumnico speakers. A little delay on the lead track courtesy of the 2290 in the loop. Perhaps I should try a different mic than the single 57 I have on there. I guess it's back to the drawing board.

Damn I love Mutt/Angus/Malcolms sound!

I think that Rhythm sounds dead on. Sounds great!

I'm not liking it.

It's missing something- Ah yes, talent!

I'm going to try again today. I think I got a little closer last PM, but it's hard to tell how the mic will translate what's coming out of the speaker.

Well...I think it's better. I still think I need an SG and a maybe a 4x12 with some greenbacks to really nail it.

This is with my '66 335...a little brighter and thinner than the LP with less ooomph into the amp. Also I'm playing a different head. This is the Blockhead vs. the Metro in the earlier clips. It's a little cleaner at the same settings.

I'm a little bummed at some distortion and mic clipping I'm hearing. I didn't pad the 414 and as such I think the diaphragm is spazzing a bit on a few of the sharper transients. Perhaps it's time I got that Royer.

All in I think it's close enough to be able to conjure the vibe of AC/DC if I want it...kind of a fun exercise. Thanks to Phil Rudd for the steady 1 bar loop of awesome drumming.

Peace,

Jack

it might have felt a little thin at the beginning, but maybe the original is as well? don't recall...

that said, I LOVED IT... it really grooved... if that had come on my radio, there's no way I would have turned the dial...

Thanks.

Well I wouldn't turn it off either...but I love AC/DC!

Anyway. The original obviously sounds a little better than my version. The SG amp, playing and the production team on H2H is incredible- I'm just a guy with a few cool guitars and a little studio in Brooklyn! It had better sound better! BTW the lows don't kick in till the big "E" chord before the chorus in the original...so it is a little thin, but cool in the verses.

I'm hearing some artifacts from the bounce, and generally I hear a little less attack and fullness in my presentation. I do think that folks would be shocked to see how little low end there is in most of the classic guitar sounds. Yes it's there, but not like when you're playing an amp. You can't have that and the lows from the bass and drums all at once- the mix just goes to pot.

Agree. And, I did hear the low end kick in. Do you ever beef up the guitar with a bit more low when it is doing an intro like that? and then back it off when the other instruments come in? I'm sometimes tempted to do that...

Here's ..02.
Getting decent recorded guitar tone is easy these days.
Getting good recorded guitar tone is quite a bit harder.
Getting the tone you hear 'in your head' is a whole lot harder.
Capturing the detail of what you hear in the room is a thorough challenge.
And cloning someone else's recorded tone is pretty near impossible.

What you have there is something that lets you play AC/DC with conviction, so a job well done!

Agreed... this is one of those tones that, had it been the original, we would be judging Angus' feeble attempts against...

Jack, that is one of the best captured AC/DC tones I have yet to hear. Great Job! How about the intro to "It's a Long Way to the Top" next? I love that woody Greenback tone!

Jack,

Who doesn't love this sound?
Classic rock and roll tone, pure as anything else.

Great job!

Chuck

Great playing as always Jack! I like the last take too. It has a little more bottom to it.
