Hey~Who's getting the full 550 ms from their Deluxe Memory Man

Don't know if I just noticed this, or if the it's changed over the years, but my DMM's barely hitting 400 milleseconds.

I know Howard Davis can adjust them to optimize performance, but does squeezing out more time cause the sound to deteriorate?

If so, I'd probably leave it as is. Such a great, great sounding delay, but it's already noisy as heck. Compared to my Memory Lane & Jacques Prisoner, the only 2 other analog delays I have to compare.

My DMM's from the first batch of reissues in the 90's. Buffered, w/hardwired AC cord, if that makes any difference.

It could be the delay pot. I had an original years ago that seemed as if it was not reaching the longest delay that it once had. I checked out the delay pot and discovered it was only reading 88k ohms indstead of it's marked 100k ohms. Still within 20% spec though. I replaced it with a new pot that measured closer to 100k and was able to get longer delay times again.

Upping it to 500mS or so will not really hurt the sound. You can hear how it gets a little noisier as you turn the delay pot up. Extrapolate that mentally and you can guess how it will sound if it were a little longer. If you need a little more delay time then the mod is worth it. See my FAQ for more info about noise and features on DMM vs Japanese analog delays, and mods etc.

Have fun!

Hey thanks guys!

Sometimes I get the urge to have my DMM totally tricked out w/all available mods, but I never get around to taking it off the board - Nothing else (that I've heard) sounds quite like a MemoryMan.

The longer the delay time you set any analog delay pedal for, the more aliasing distortion and white noise you get. Modding the DMM for up to around 700 msec or so of maximum delay time however does not make these unacceptably bad. If interested in this and my other DMM mods, please email me at howard.davis2@att.net

my dmm is newer (2006?). it gets around 420-440 milliseconds. it is actually exactly where i like it. mine is also very quiet . . . . if i remember correctly, having that hardwired cord can increase hum potential. can't remember where i read that. . . . still the finest sounding delay made.

It sounded good to me bro. You definitely are getting good tone out of that rig and you SHOULD be questioning the thousands you have tied up in all that other gear. I think I need to go look in the mirror now.
