In praise of the Les Paul Special

I just got a Historic Les Paul Special. It's the first Special I've owned. I've owned a couple of Juniors and currently also have a Historic Junior. First of all, as others have noted many times before, the Special is not a Junior with an extra pickup. Not at all. Many people have said that the bridge pickup on a Junior blows away the bridge pickup on the Special. I disagree. They are different for sure. The Junior has that ballsy, rude, and big rock tone. The Special cannot come close to the Junior for that tone. But the Special has its own thing going on with the bridge pickup. It's lighter, airier, and has more chime. It's perfect for power pop or alt-country kind of tones. Much better than my Junior for that kind of sound. The Junior doesn't sound nearly as nice as the Special with a edge of break up Vox kind of a set up. It sounds a bit neutered. Like it's not being true to itself. And the brutishness of the Junior still pokes through. The Junior is still king for in your face aggression. The Special just has a sweet and chimey sound. The neck pickup and the middle position are both wonderful. My Tokai Love Rock with Seth Lovers is great on the neck and middle, but it tends to get muddy with overdrive. Not so much with the Special. It remains clear and articulate in the neck and middle with a fair amount of overdrive. I may have finally found the perfect Les Paul for me!

Let's see what your new guitar looks like!

By the way, I'm still playing that Edwards w/Seth Lovers I got from you a while back. I love that guitar!

I remember working at a music store and the owner came in one day with 56 TV Yellow Special. It was spectacular. And, yeah, it sounded fantastic through an AC-15...

Glad you dig your Special.

Yes, pics or it didn't happen!

I love Specials.

Yet oddly don't currently have a Gibby or Epi LP Special. I used to have a singlecut Gibby, but it had P-100's and I sold it. I'm plenty happy with my Hamer Special and Schecter Tempest Special though.

I take it that "Murphy" is shorthand for a Gibson Murphy-aged guitar or something like that?

I don't know because there's no point in me keeping up with the higher-end models.

Exactly. I only got the Murphy (not a big 'relic' fan) because it was the best Special they had out of 4 Historics and wasn't as $$$ as I expected.

That's very subtle, though, looks great.

Ta.

Is that a little Supro amp? I bet that amp and the Special blend well!

It's a Valco 1616T. A match made in heaven.
