Own and play them, and love them. Disagree that ebony yields a brighter sound, adds a bit more punch or immediacy to my ears though. Feels great....the slickness seems to make bends easier when your fingers contact it. I have read that it can be somewhat more prone to cracking, so proper storage may be more of a factor.

I'm not a big maple fretboard fan. I have lots of rosewood boards and a couple ebony. Ebony is very smooth and just feels hard and slick, doesn't have the texture of rosewood. I do agree with the majority that it does add brightness to the guitar. I've had 2 carvin CT4s 1 rosewood, 1 ebony. The ebony was way brighter.

Oh sure, 6120, D28, few other acoustics, had a few Strats with ebony, Les Pauls, Jazz Boxes. Very dense and clear. Feels a lot like maple. Good stuff.

All my guitars have ebony fret boards! I just like the feel. I'll have to try some rosewood and maple some time.

I have a couple. I find them nice. smoother than Rosewood, but honestly, not worlds away, perhaps best described as a bit snappier.

I have a friend that's a wood worker. he says cutting a peice of ebony is like slicing through chocolate, just a joy.

Love 'em because of the feel. Soundwise, who know/cares? But I'll pic 'em for feel everytime. Like Pau Ferro too, also because of the feel.

Most of my Jacksons have ebony boards. I like them but don't really know if they make much difference in tone compared to maple or rosewood. Without tearing the fretboard off and replacing it with another type on the same guitar how would you know?

Not brighter...different. Crisper with a better balance of tones.

I'll also +1 the immediacy comment.

You need a Les Paul with an ebony fretboard.
