Sounding good doesn't have to be expensive

I don't even have $1300 invested in everything you hear in this clip. Thought it'd be fun to do a more straight-ahead blues tune with the Traynor and the Tele since I don't have that combination recorded anywhere and everything was still in place from recording my Carr for the ebay auction last night.

Here's what came out of it.

Hmm... not that I'm a raging comment whore or anything, but I thought someone would have said something by now. Maybe this didn't sound as good as I thought, but I was pretty damn thrilled with the tone. God, I love that Traynor. And I really love that Tele too. It's a pretty good matchup.

Nice tone indeed... Sounds good, as does some very nice blues phrasing by you ...

Actually would luv to hear a slight touch of compression to attenuate the pickup's attack or bite a little ...
then you'll be moving your setup into tone excellence (but that's just my particular taste ...)

All this talk about compression...what about dynamics? =)

I think it sounds good man. I'm diggin' that Traynor as well. I've got to try to find one locally to check out.

Yo Jazzy ... don't buy into that myth ...
A touch of compression can enormously enhance an already good tone
without destroying any dynamics ...

I know, I know...I'm just kidding around but I think some people use it when they don't need to as well. I've seen some pretty amazing players using just their fingers, volume, and tone knobs to enhance the soul of the playing.

Ok, better not hijack this thread!

Being a former student of audio engineering, I never understood the use of compression as an effect. There is some light compression on the overall mix though. The one thing I should mention about this track that may factor here is that the guitar part was recorded with a computer microphone.

Anyway, I don't suppose you could explain it a little? Is that all it does? Take the edge off basically? When/why would I use it? I pretty much never use effects when I play anymore but I'm guessing for a really heavy rhythm gig (soul/funk/r&B stuff) maybe a little compression would be a good thing to have.

I wish I had the CV Tele. Then it'd be a $550 rig that probably would have sounded about the same. Or hell, maybe that axe + $200 for the set of Antiquities (which is what you're hearing in that Tele in the clip) and we're looking at $750 for the whole thing.
