Is reverb discouraged in live venues?

Just wondering, cause there are a few amp techs who told me it's not really necessary to use amp reverb during performances since there'll be natural reverb already. And I've heard there's also a risk of getting your sound muddied when you use them, depending on the size of venue and all.

Personally I never use it playing live. You can't really hear it anyway, and if anything it's just one more layer of processing for your signal to have to cut through.

Outside is a different story, but I do not use it inside.

That's a good point, and I'll revise my prior statement to agree with michael.e. I haven't played outside in a long time, but when I did I used reverb.

I miss reverb.. I always had it for 8 years of gigs (ANYWHERE) and for the past 20 years have mostly used delays instead as most of my amps no longer have reverb.. I like it and don't care if someone feels it muddies sound or whatever. I like a little of it for any type of music I play from metal to punk to fusion. Other styles obviously might benefit with more of it. There's no right or wrong with music. It's all up to personal taste and person ability .

I agree - I have found that reverb gets in the way and muds things up on my electric when I'm at a gig. Instead, I much prefer delay. For basement practicing, however, reverb is nice.

On the other hand, reverb seems o.k. giging with my acoustic. Although I haven't used delay with it (I don't have a good delay for acoustic) - maybe I'd like delay better here, too.
