Gilmour: "Strat Players more recognizable"

The "Les Paul = Limited Tone" thread was timely, as I just read in the new David Gilmour article (Guitar Player, page 79) where he says "In my view, you can recognize guitar players who play a Strat more readily than you can those who play Gibsons, and that's an opinion I've held for some time".

When I think of Strat, I think of EC, SRV, EJ, Beck - all recognizable, but then again, I can pick Duane Allman Slash, Angus, Page, Warren Haynes or heck, even EJ out of a crowd on their Gibsons as well.

What say you?

I agree with that.
I believe Strats and Teles too show player nuance more clearly.

I disagree.

Look at Santana.

You are correct but I think he's more an exception.
Nobody has that sound so he easily stands out.

I would simplify that by saying I believe lower output pickups force the player to have a little more, or lack there of, control.

I agree as well. Strats are easier to pick out, for me at least. I don't think I could tell whether Slash was playing one of his Mockingbirds or one of his Les Pauls. I could pick out his playing though, regardless of instrument.

I agree with Johnny5. I play both and love the sounds from both, but a Fender seems to have more character to me.

I absolutely love Gilmour's playing, but I always look askance at opinions expressed by anybody about a particular model of guitar if that person has a "signature model" of that brand of guitar currently on the market...

...just sayin'

I think Strat players are more recnognizable, becuase the strat has one sound that is recognizable, whereas with a Gibson you have three rather distinct tones that are available

Well, he's historically favored it so what he thinks of it is not bull.

The timing is right to state it though......................

They're completely different guitars. If played clean, both are recognizably... different. Crank both up loud enough, change pups, and you can't tell the difference.

I think that in many cases a big ole fat humbucker hits the tape with too hot of a signal so to a large degree, the nuances of an individual player's style are lost. I don't see this happening with Strat and Tele players.

Eh, what do I know? My main guitar is a strat with a (gasp) JB in the bridge.

I think a strat/tele/single coil cuts through the mix a little more. They are more vibrant and natural sounding to me.I find Les Pauls very dark and not as transparent.Just my opinion....
