Satriani suing Coldplay for copyright infringement/plagiarism

Say it ain't so, Joe! There are similarities between the two songs, but they are purely coincidental IMHO.

that, the creaky boards song, and viva ALL sound like almost every single sappy 60's asian drama movie soundtrack put out - certain progressions just come out when you try to convey certain moods. think "man in an overcoat in the rain under a lamp post at night by a stormy sea, thinking about the woman he had to leave behind" - yeah, THAT soundtrack. it's all human nature folks, nothing to see here that hasn't been seen before.

Could be coincidental...but I doubt it. Btw, it's not about the chord progression. You can't copyright that according to some music business students I know here in Nashville...the melody however is a different story, and based on how popular Satriani is it's likely he could have a good case against Coldplay.

Just to be up front, If I Could Fly is one of my favorite Satch songs and I am a huge Satch fan. Objectively though, I think the main melodies are WAY too close to purely coincidental. I think Satch has a pretty good case here.

I agree. This is far more egregious than even Red Hot Chili Peppers/dani california copying tom petty/mary jane's last dance

I agree they do to a point, but just the chorus progression and about 75% of the melody. If I Could Fly and Viva La Whatever only share one progression, and that progression can only be heard from approximately :50 - 1:15 and 1:45 - 2:10 of Satriani's song, comprising a whopping 50 seconds of a song that is 6 and a half minutes long. The melody is similar for the most part, but is not an exact replica. Could easily have been an innocent coincidence. Somehow, I doubt Coldplay listen to a lot of shredder music. If you think about the enormous number of musicians in the entire world, the chances of these coincidences happening is pretty high IMO, especially with western music and the fact that we only have 12 notes to work with.

Maybe Coldplay can write another whiny tune out of that

Satch as strong case. He only sold one copy of the album but it was purchased in the UK.

I always felt like Petty ripped that off from the Jayhawks.

Maybe Satch can't stand Coldplay and has finally had enough of listening to that damn song...
