`Oh eye indeed he does.

Got to see the trio in London [think it was last year]. Soundcheck/audience chat and then later a gig.

90% came across as jammed/improvised but it was stunning. never seem to hear him play the same thing twice.

I don't know how you could say that. The blues by definition is going to have some cliche' s in it. I think the dude rocks the house down.

I say it because he is playing the same stuff he plays on the fusion albums he used to do. If he was playing blues licks I wouldn't have said anything. That would have been very differnt than what he is known for.

Where did I say his playing was bad? I said the music was mislabled as blues

This particular clip I wouldn't call blues-just a Hootchie Cootchie kind of groove with some Scott all over it. PArt of the soloing is a little too outside even for me.
I think that "Hole Diggin' or "Dolemite" is basically blues with Scott's brilliant style and very dry sense of humor. Also, if you ever get the chance, listen to "Players" with Jeff Berlin, T Lavitz and I believe Steve Gadd? maybe on drums. More fusioney but there is a cut called "The Creeping Terror" which has this wild blues kind of section in there.
Very bluesy Scott Albums=Tore Down House, Dog Party, Well to the Bone.
Gotta love Kirk Covington-absolutely fabulous phenomenal drummer who can sing at the same time while playing some really complicated shit. Whew!

By the way-F# is a killer key to play blues in as well as C#. Creates for some more unusual and interesting playing. Try it sometime! Yuo'll love it! It is a way of life!!!

Try playing in F# on a keyboard! It's rough, for sure.

Yeah, F# is great. Fantastic for using those open B and E strings. Same with C#. Love the video, thanks for the link!

Agreed, and yes Scott tunes down a half step. F is cool, especially if it's a maj7th. I do dig what you're saying, though. Things in F# are a little easier to GROK, especially in a minor rock context. No, it doesn't always have to be G! Unless you're keyboard player starts giving you the confused puppy head tilt!

"Blues"? "Blues band"? Ummm, I failed to catch any trace of that element in there. There are three guys up there and I could not discern how any one of 'em was playing blues music. I play blues, but I think I'll start callng it jazz and see who notices.

F-sharp is great on gtr, if only for the "whole step down" possibilities, as mentioned. Poor, tortured keyboard guys who haven't found the little button that puts every key on the white keys!

Steve Smith of Journey fame playing on that Players album. Totally great album. Scott's always played blues-based licks in all of his gigs (well with the exception of Jean Luc Ponty who don't dig the blues) so I have always thought there wasn't much of a transition to the blues gigs. Amazing everytime he suits up.
