Celestion question

Hey, that rhymes.

Which 12" Celestion has the tightest bass? I hate flubby bass.

G12K-100 has great, tight bass. Overall, a thoroughly recommended speaker.

V30s for me have the tightest bass.
They don't have the most or deepest bass but what they do have is very tight.
It's almost as if they have voiced the V30 to have a slightly chopped off deep bass and this with it's 100db sensitivity makes it the tightest of the celes........IMO...although my IMO is often a fact...he he he

+1 The G12K-100 is the "dark horse" of the Celestion line meaning it seems to get no recognition and when it does its linked(by Celestions own description) to heavy nu-metal. Its a great speaker IMO with tight defined bass strong mids and a smooth top end. One of my faves (if you couldnt tell lol!) and good for a variety of styles! Bob

I think many of he popular guitar speakers have decent bass ... i think it's the amps that sometimes limit bass to provide more focused leads. A lot of the '80's metal amps, for example, seem to be light on the bass.

What amp, speaker, and cabinet style (open or closed back) are you currently using? What level of overdrive/distortion are you using?

Thank you! Everyone's ready to give their opinion on their favorite speaker here without finding out some important pieces of the puzzle.

Also, how many speakers will you be running in the cabinet?

The v30 and the CL80 are both pretty stiff in that department.

I play a Strat, Tele and a JM through an Egnater Rebel 20 and a 1x12 Avatar cab. My board looks like this:

I have a Celestion Gold and there's way too much bass and it's flabby bass. I want a speaker that will limit the bass. Even with the tight switch engaged there's still too much flabby bass.

Is your Avatar cab closed or open back? If it is open, consider going closed back.

You may want to look into a CL80, I think Egnator uses a custom CL80 in their Rebel cabs....

Yes the Egnater uses a CL80-not custom(at least thats what I remember Mr Egnater stating I could be wrong)- just a different label. Closed back will tighten up the bass for sure.

I personally dont like closed backs. That said copying the Egnater set up may be your best bet. The Egnater 1x12 cab isnt closed though its ported. Bob

Do you prefer a brighter or darker sound? Name off some players who you'd say have influenced what tones you're aiming for.

Bruce has said the Elite 80's he uses are custom voiced for him.

I second the recommendation to use an Egnater 1x12 cab with the Rebel head. MANY people who have played it through other cabs have raved about how much better it sounds through the oversized cab that Bruce designed for it.

And a ported amp like the Eggie 1x12 has MUCH more in common sonically with a completely closed cab than it does with a standard open-back cab.

OK I knew he said it was basically the same but yes you are right its not exact. If I get this head I'll let you know how it sounds with my G12K-100's. These speakers are similar to the CL80. At any rate -in his own words- IBob

The Egnater Elite 80 is a Classic Lead 80 that is private labeled for us. They did some sort of tweak to the low end that makes it ever so slightly fuller in a small cabinet. Honestly, I don't know if anyone could really tell the difference between the Egnater and the CL80 except maybe in a blind A/B test. I would consider them interchangeable. FYI, this speaker excels over other speakers in the smaller cabinets (open or closed back) for a much fuller/tighter low end, smoother high end and tons less cone break up (farting). How loud you play has a tremendous effect on how a speaker responds. A V30 can sound brighter, clearer at low volumes but does tend to get a little abrasive in the high end and definitely breaks up easier than the 80 at higher volume.

Cool, man. I figured it was a small change. I think it's the combination of that small tweak along with the design of Bruce's 1x12 cabinet that together makes a noticeable difference in the overall sound.
