Assuming electric, Ibanez Gio Mikro. My daughter has one and I can't keep my hands off of it. I have a mini fender something or other too, but the Ibanez is MUCH lighter which is a big deal. Also the flat edges of the Ibanez lets then hold it sitting down where the fender is Strat shape and slides off of their laps.

I just picked up 2 used Squier Mini Strats for my 7 & 4 year old nephews for $50 each on my local CL. They just needed slight tweaking (I'm anal) and they acutally sound good and play well.

Joe Bonamassa started out with a chiquita(sp) guitar. May want to check out other travel guitars.

Maybe a vintage small scale Fender Musicmaster or Duo Sonic? They are easy to play and good investments.

Rondo.com sells short scale guitars in both strat and tele flavors. Decent quality for the price. http://www.rondomusic.com/sst6234vwh.html

I can't stress this enough. The Strat body style is awesome and all, but my almost eight-year-old girl, who is petite, cannot play hers worth a damn. Hers is heavy, and the body style just doesn't work for a kid sitting, kneeling, or doing anything but standing with a strap. No matter how she tries, it slides off of her lap, so she can't hold it properly.

The Ibanez with its RG body style has a very flat edge and is very easy for her to hold sitting or kneeling.

YMMV of course, but I'd strong recommend bringing the child with you and having them try to sit with the guitar while you watch to see if it will work.

That's it! They come in different colors too.

Also for $200 you can get one with an amp built in called the Mikro Sonik:

Also I'll add that on both the Strat copy and the Ibanez I had to do a bit of setup on them, which I'd expect on a $100 guitar. The Ibanez was better out of the box though. It also stays in tune better (at least between my two) because it does not have a trem.
