Mixing Speakers: To X-Pattern or not?
Hey guys!
I finally found the perfect compliment of speakers for my amp! VERY happy camper here, and I'm finally getting my tones, ironically, out of the amp I thought it would NEVER come from ![]() So, I have two Mesa Traditional 4x12s, one loaded with Vintage 30s, the other with the G12K-100s. They compliment each other SOO well that it is not funny. So, right now I have a quad of each speaker in each cab. Should I go ahead and x-pattern both cabs? Is there ANY downside to an x-pattern in a cab? Is there any reason I'd want to keep the speakers separated? Overall, I believe the amp sounds better with both speakers rather than one, so my logic is the x-pattern is the way to go for the 'best mix.' Appreciate the input! Eric

I would think that X'ing them up would work out great. You could scale down when needed and only drag along one cab and still have your tone.
I have been X'ing my cabs for about 8 years and really like the results. Plus, it gives the sound guy two speaker options when mic'ing up the cabs. |

As far as possible downside to putting the different speakers in the same cab, some speakers tend to cancel each other out in certain frequencies, so there's no telling how the two types of speakers will react when in the same box.
I've mixed some speakers that caused some ghost notes/cone cry when put in the same closed-back cab. When I took off the back, there wasn't a problem. Something about those speakers and that cab. I would just go for it and see how it sounds. |

Go for it.
You don't necessarily have to use the x pattern tough. I have a Marshall 1960B with G12-65s and G12H30s, and I liked it better with both 65s on top.
