Wink Why do we do this to ourselves?

I was just thinking,there is always a new " boutique " p.u. winder,&
everything else is no good. In terms of tele p.u.'s,first there was FCS,
SD Antiquities,Rio Grandes,Lollars,O.C.Duff,now it is Don Mare. I'm sure
six months down the line there will be someone else. Is there no end to
this insanity?

It's not a case that everything else is no good, far from it. It's a case of additional choices. What's wrong with that?

BTW, not sure where this is coming from, Don has been around for awhile now. He's been a member here for some time as well. I bought some pickups from Don over two years ago. Why post this now as if it's something brand new?

I think you can slow down the buying/trying habit, but very difficult to stop it all-together

Mickey Mouse Club tv show theme song. I'm of the right age group to know that.

Because it is a never ending quest. Fortunately for me, things have been converging the past few years, but I am sure my tastes will continue to evolve.

Any competitive field will have continual advancement (i.e. computer clock speeds, engine horsepower, materials sciences, telecommunications ...) I guess some may argue guitar achieved perfection 50 years ago, and the rest is just snake oil.

I think there is a lot more to pickup winding and there are a few people with great ears that understand how everything interacts. I also believe at this point with pickups, it is diminishing returns and the improvements are either very small incremental improvements or lateral changes.

That said, I have non-corksniffer approved pickups (stock PRS and stock G&L) in my main guitars. I am happy and get good sounds.

Anytime you have a group of people in one place you have a (Drumroll)..........Marketing Opportunity. !!!!!! As long as you have these chat rooms, er excuse me, forums, you will have people trying to sell you something. Whether it's a direct pitch or 2nd or 3rd hand. I think it would be hilarious for someone to pitch life insurance or something similar by way of the forums. I can see it now...... Whoa, I just bought this awesome policy from so and so on the forum , here's his email. Then 3 or 4 other guys would chime in with the same story, you know like they do with the other stuff here.

Of course there is. Seymour Duncan, for example, is no slouch when it comes to pickups. If you feel you need to go with some small builder, fine. It's certainly not an obligation...
