Red Fang 10!!
I just bought a pair of Red Fang 10s to try in my 2x10 combo. My thought was that I could move the amp in a 18-Watt direction with these British-voiced AlNiCo speakers. I was wrong about that. The speakers don't make the amp sound 18-Wattish at all. (I guess it's the tubes and the architecture, more than anything, that make an 18-Watter an 18-Watter!) Nevertheless, what I wound up with is something that, on first listens, is super-impressive in its own right.
To begin with, the RFs are LOUD! Eminence rates them at 102.1dB sensitivity. I'm inclined to believe it. These speakers are punchy. But they are also smooth. I hear no annoying peaks in the frequency response. At low volumes, the tone is rich and full. Cranked, the tone is aggressive without being harsh, i.e., not overly mid-focussed, but having an all-around punch. The RFs are not overly bright; they actually have a warmth to their tonal character. The signature voices of individual guitars are translated well by the RFs. So far, I like them a lot. I look forward to trying them at a blues jam on Monday. FYI, the previous speakers in the amp were a pair of Weber AlNiCo Signature 10Ss. Great speakers themselves! Bob Arbogast |

I'm surprised at the 'warmth' comments. While IMO a great speaker, the 12 inch version is a very bright speaker.

I have the 12" version in a Fender Princeton Reverb II and I love it. I was thinking of getting the 10" for my Super Champ.

How would you compare the treble and upper mid content to the Webers you had in there?

I've got the 3x10 version of the Black Pearl, and those speakers sound great in it. I usually play a Tele on the bridge pickup and have no problem with the brightness...I'm actually surprised how warm it is!

Thanks Bob, that's exactly what I wanted to know. You build some very cool amps by the way!

Glad to hear about the lack of break up. I tried a reissue P10R that broke up at first possible chance and offered ice picky highs galore. I couldn't stand that little SOB so I figured I'd get the darkest, fullest sounding speaker available, the Eminence Delta Demon. No break up at any level, but I'm starting to miss some highs. Also, the compression I get from the Red Fang 12 is something I'd love to hear coming from my Super Champ.
With what I've been reading on this thread, I'm going to get the Red Fang 10 as soon as I have the coin. (Just need to get that Turbo Tuner ST-200 first) |

how would you compare a red fang and a celestion g12h30 70th anniversary? I know the g12h30 isn't an alnico magnet, but I'm curious to know which would be better in an AC15.
