Best Fender/Marshall channel switcher?
Just a kick thread b/c this ARI/CAR game is getting lopsided. I am ALWAYS looking for this amp and know it really doesn't exist. Had a Lonestar for awhile but just found the "crunch" channel to be too murky/muddy. I also had a Rivera Duarte model but never really bonded with it. Always thought it was too "hi-fi" sounding. I'm using my Voodoo V-Plex combo right now but I would love something a bit smaller & more portable.
Would need to be able to do Zep/ACDC/GnR with a Les Paul and SRV with a Strat. Kind of a portable modded Marshall//Super Reverb. What's out there? :BEER |

try the Bogner Alchemist. I just bought one and i wasnt even looking for an amp. I walked into the music store and a friend of mine working there said I should try it. I looked an it and said "no thanks man too many switches for me" I mean it kind of looks like a wank amp. But I did try it and I bought it!!! he,he.
The clean channel kills, the crunch channel is so harmonic and chewy I couldnt believe it and when you play it hangs on just right and goes into harmonic sustain like a good 18 watt marshall. the High gain channel floored me. This IS the perfect gig amp for most styles except for maybe the ultra heavy. even the delay and reverb sound great. GC is selling the Head for $956.00 Buddy.... |

Ive had a few Rivera's including the M100 212 combo, which is very close to the Duarte. great clean, but the OD wasnt Marshall like to me. I also had an M60, and an R100 212. All good, but not quite Marshall. I now have a Bad Cat Panther reverb, and its very close to the fender Marshall thing. Best Ive tried so far.

You could also look at the HOOK Captain 34, a Dutch 3-channel head.
http://www.hookamps.com/ I play live with, the best live sound I ever had. |

My favorite amp #1 easily
My favorite amp #2 will do it with some special EQ settings and if you swap the tubes for a good ANUS set and get the new Scumsludge speaker replacement, then my favorite amp #3 can also get you in the ballpark for sure.

if it were me I would get one amp that's not a channel switcher that can do both reasonably well, like a tweed bassman style amp.
otherwise I would try something like this: a bf/sf fender head like a bassman or bandmaster, a/b'd with something marshally like a jtm45 or 50 watt plexi. If you a/b them into the same cab (say, a 2x12 with g12h30s), you would still have a pretty manageable rig size wise, but still have tons of versatility. |

+1! Don't buy into any hype (or non-hype) go try it for yourself, and let your ears be the judge.
It's a wonderfully versatile amp - and not a terrible price either. I bought the 1x12 combo, and it sounds fantastic. |

Tried the Alchemist quickly and at low volume and was mildly impressed. I really would like to check out a Shiva, which many believe to be the ultimate solution to the initial quandry...

My Landry smokes it for the types of tones we're talking about. Like BIGTIME smokes it.

Marshall JVM. My 410C does excellent Fender clean and the history of great Marshall tones on the other 3 channels.

1) really looking for a grab and go 1x12" combo. However, I understand the versatility inherent in a head/cab and would consider budging. Sure, big combos are heavy but bottom line, I'm a strong man (6'6", 240lbs) but I still only have two hands. 2) The Landrys seem to be (please, don't take this the wrong way) kind of a "flavor of the month". Meaning buying one right now may be like buying tech stocks in 2000. It's not like I can try one out, so best case scenario, I have maybe a 50-60% chance of absolutely loving it. Then I take a huge hit in the used market. Bringing me to... 3) Price. I have two rules for gear. 1--buy used and 2--never drop more than $2k on an amp. I am assuming that these amps go for more than that figure new and I'm pretty sure I won't see one in the Emporium any time soon. I was also intrigued by what you said about the Shiva also...you mentioned the crunch channel not sounding "Marshally"...you thought the clean channel was "Fendery" though, eh? Thanks! |
