Mastodon

So, I haven't listened to much metal in a long time, but Metallica's excellent Death Magentic got me back in the mood. I picked up Mastodon's Blood Mountain after reading some reviews online and it's great. They definitely have their own sound and are great players and songwriters. Their drummer is amazing and it really sounds like they're taking the music to some new places. Just wondered if anyone else was digging them.

I love Blood Mountain.
The older stuff lacks structure IMO.

Remission, Leviathan, and Blood Mountain are all excellent.
Check out "Aqua Dementia" and "Megalodon" off of Leviathan!

I caught them live at a small club on the Leviathan Tour and I thought they were great. You're right their drummer is very good. He's got a white polka dot drum kit cuz he's a Randy Rhoads fan. Pretty cool.

One of the guitarists and the drummer were in local bands here in Rochester that I've seen over the years. Great musicians.

I haven't listened to much Mastodon but it sounds like they've got something good going.

I grew up on 80's metal, the golden age or megadeth, metallica, anthrax, testament, slayer, exodus, etc..... I lost interest in metal in the 90's as my tastes drifted more into the jamband realm.

About 6-8 months ago i saw a post about Mastodon and checked them out on youtube. I was blown away. This is what I have been missing for a long time. To me, it feels like the natural evolution of the metal from the 80's. No over the top satanic or horrific lyrics. Semi decent vocals(this is clearly their weak spot but at least its not purely growling). And most importantly, minimal use of the blast beat. I can understand its use to build tension. But entire albums of songs with nothing but blast beats? Major turn off. I like metal that grooves.

Great band. The drummer is a monster. The new song is a bit boring but I'll wait to pass judgement until I hear the full CD. Also check out Lamb of God and Neurosis.

man, that 6/8 (i think) instrumental section off of one of the blood mountian tunes where brent does that off kilter chicken pickin' thing is sooo sick, it sounds like your cd is skipping!! very innovative and kickass.

but, i also have a tough time enjoying the vocalists.
