Grumble....Weber Won't Fit

So I've got a Weber 8F125 that I was going to put into my "new" '68 vibro champ.

except the mallory cap can is too long and i can't get the bugger in there. the cap can bumps into the ribs on the back of the speaker basket.

maybe it'll fit if i remove the baffle and attack it that way. or maybe this is fate telling me that i need to do a cap job on it anyway and replace it with one of those shorter cap cans.

grrrrr. sometimes the simplest things aren't so simple.

cheers,
wade

Would have to see the cap and it's size. I assume you've tried turning the amp 1/8 of a turn to see if the rib clears.

Had the same problem...replaced the cap with a CE Manufacturing short job and, lo and behold, the amp sounded much better even with the old speaker.

Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise.

If you opt to cut away part of the speaker basket/frame, make sure you put paper under the frame to catch filings and tape it off well. I have people do that and some have gotten filings into the bowels of the speaker and ruined it. But, otherwise, that can be done with a hack saw.

Yeah, i've got one of those CE shorties in my '74 vibro champ and there's no doubt it sounded a whole lot better after the swap. But that amp audibly needed a cap job....this one sounds wonderful as is--perfectly quiet with no crackles, etc. Perhaps this IS fate telling me "change it anyway".

Gris, I've no plans to modify the baffle in any way what so ever. If i want to put a 10 in there, i'll either get a new baffle or run it to an extension cabinet.

cheers,
wade

To gain an extra 1/2" of clearance, you can front mount the speaker to the baffle. You'll need to take off the grille cloth and reinstall to do it, but you'll get your 1/2" and your speaker will likely fit.

Unfortunately, even 1/2in of clearance won't do much for me. i pulled off the baffle this afternoon and mounted the speaker and then put it back in place. this time the basket wasn't even in question--the ceramic magnet bumped right into that cap can. it's just too wide. i could fit an alnico sig 8s in there, or even an 8A125......but the 8F125 won't fit as it is.

guess i need to recap it with one of those CE shorties.

cheers,
wade

I didn't say anything about modding the baffle. I was talking about cutting a part of one spine off the speaker frame. Seen it done MANY times.. :-)

If you bought that speaker from Ted, he'll do the cutout for you, just contact him. Although now you're saying the magnet is hitting, so I don't know if the cutout in the speaker frame will help you there.

Gris, my apologies--i totally misread what you were talking about.

Yeah, it looks like this speaker just won't fit with the existing cap can. The 8A125 would fit, due to the different shape of the magnet.....but the diameter of the magnet on the 8F125 is too wide.

Seems that i've got 2 choices--replace the cap can or use a different speaker. seems like a simple choice, too.

cheers,
wade

Another choice is to get a replacement baffle with the speaker hole offset to clear the can. I was looking at a Mojo 12" baffle for my PR, and the cutout for the speaker is offset for this reason.

I just checked Mojo and there is an upcharge of $45 to change the speaker cutout if you buy one of their Champ baffles, so it would come to $97.50 for one from them (has grillcloth and everything). You might be able to get one for less from another maker, though.
