I just joined the forums the other day. Great info all over the place. It's just going to fuel my addiction. I had never played guitar until I graduated from college and needed something new to learn. I've only been playing for about a year and a half and I have become completely obsessed with everything guitar. I now have 5 electrics and one acoustic and I don't see any end in sight. How many others out there are completely obsessed? All I want to do is play guitar and learn as much as I can about them. It's ridiculous......

On the positive side, it sounds like you have a fire to play and to learn, not just to acquire. That fire can bring you very far.
This site is amazing in terms of gear availability and gear knowledge. There are many here who would love to get their collections down to 6 guitars. I don't know your financial situation, but one way to pace yourself is to tie purchases to milestones in your progress with practicing and learning. That said, sometimes just the right thing appears ... and you need to grab it. Some people here have "rotating" collections, meaning that they buy and sell, or trade, keep trying different things, keeping the ones that really work. I've been pretty obsessed, but I seem to be slowing down. For me, fooling with and trying gear has been a useful way of spicing up the more repetitious aspects of practicing. |

Just wait until you try all the bells and whistles that comes switching out and trying new components of the guitar.

Guitars are a great hobby. Lots of variety, almost endless. More endless than my bank account.
Music is so therapeutic. As long as you don't develop carpel tunnel, it's a pretty safe hobby. You don't have to wear a helmet or anything. Only downside is explaining purchases to the Mrs., if you're married.

When ever you need a fix, just stop into Grandma's Music and Sound. You'll be good to go.

For years I got by with one bass and one guitar.
Then I actually "made it" with a job that actually pays well. Now I have over 60 guitars and basses. Trying to whittle the collection down a bit, but at least it's better than blowing the money on women, gambling, drugs and booze. At least I think it is. |

I think TGP is up to something like 33,000+ members, so there's your answer--we're all filthy addicts here...

Welcome! This place is kinda like an AA meeting where they hand you 7&7's at the door.

Pretty amazing, isn't it? You see something that looks cool, hear it play, and then if it matches what you like to use and it's different enough from your other stuff you get it.
I have one bass I got because it was a six-string neck-thru, a brand I liked for other stuff (Peavey), and under $300. Then I got another six-string bass because finding a fretless in that configuration is next to impossible especially for the price I paid for it. Then a bit later I got another six-string bass just for the Bartolini electronics + active 3-band eq onboard + ergonomics. They each give me something the other doesn't, so even though I use the Peavey the majority of the time, I have the other two. Guitars are even worse, and for less justification. I now have one superstrat-type basswood baritone 7-string model with LFR, one mahogany/maple model, one mahogany v-model with EMG's and LFR, and one ash model. Add to that a nylon acoustic and two steel acoustics (one of which I'll probably give away to someone with smaller hands and body than I). Now, since I like the basic sound and feel of most of my gear, it's then time to try to delve into the world of amplifiers, pickups, and such. Since I don't have a whole lot of space to devote to amps, I make do with an effects box and a bass combo amp...but I just know I'll be wanting more eventually... |

I still have credit, but I'm running out of space...
