Tricked out Super Champ XD

Following the lead of some other guys here, I scored a SCXD, put in a Ragin Cajun, but really loved the tones through a 1 12. So I had JD Newell build one of his custom 1 12 combo cabs for this chassis, onto which I had him install Fender tilt legs, and into which I put my loved Jensen Neo. I can't tell you how incredibly good this sounds. Featherweight (24#) as the pine has replaced mdf, and just a perfect size for most of what I do now. Without a loop, for real time live use, I put lead pedals (really loving the cmatmods Brownie and Signa) in front of a ME50 and keep the xd on the clean channel. If I need massive headroom/volume, I run the direct out to my FBT Maxx2a powered monitor and am good to go. The SCXD is a true sleeper of an amp. I got mine used for ~200 bucks. Putting this rig together has been more gear fun than I've had in a long time

That looks great! I may have to go that route in purple. How does that Neo sound with the amp? Does the clean still sparkle?

Nice. I'm thinking that I should look into making mine a head. I wonder if JD Newell would do that.

I've used, and been a fan of, Jensen Neos for a long time. I've tried all the others, most anyway, and prefer the Jensen. No tone sacrifice. Well balanced.

We Jon S's must stick together! bluesdoc is right about the Jensen Neos, it was he who advised me long ago on the subject of Neos, I followed his lead with my Neo in my Tone King and have never regretted it.

Jon, I'll be test-driving a Super Champ XD today:

Beautiful job! I was always hankering for brown tolex for years as it was clearly the most underappreciated, disctinctive and underused of all the classic Fender shades. But then I saw one at GC and I thought, I dunno, in person it reminds me less of yummy chocolate and more of pale doggie doo doo. Newell has a ton of great coverings, I'd go with something edgier and aggro. Maybe even something like that crazy snakeskin like they use on that new PRS Original Sewell series that Derek likes. Or confuse everyone and cover it with either that cheezy gray stick-on crap they used to use on Silvertones or maybe really get the heads scratching with classic deep blue Ampeg checkerboard vinyl! (and change the logo to "Bender")

I emailed him about building a head shell for mine. Figured it couldn't hurt.

That's a cool project. I haven't tried the Super Champ yet, but it looks great on paper.

Kyle, it's about 17" tall, + large rubber feet. About 17.5" wide, and 9.5" deep.

He apparently responds to email quickly as well. I already got a quote and a list of options. Just have to determine if it's worth sinking money into a $300 amp when all I'm doing is really making it look a little better.

Moving up from a 10" to a 12" speaker is hardly how I'd define "all I'm doing is really making it look a little better."
