Peavey VTM60/120 is a great hot rodded JCM800 alternative. You can find those for $2-400. Crate Blue voodoo while not glorious would be great for less than $500. The clean channel on those will break up like a Superlead when you turn it up. Peavey Classic 50/100 head, with a pedal will rip high gain.

So 5150 is the best option.

5150 forever.

Even if you could afford a Diezel or Uberschall... that doesn't necessarily mean they will be better!

At any price the 5150 will slay, and it's absolutely mind blowing that a landmark, quintessential metal amp can be had for $600.

I know I've talked about modding it, but that's not even really necessary. Good guitar/pickups + good cab = Valhalla

You spend $100-200 less and you get a much poorer amp. You spend $3000 more, and it might sound worse for your purposes.

I'm wrestling with getting one myself

Tweed Bassman + pedal or two for Marshally stuff
5150

You'd be hard pressed to find a better set up!

look at used marshalls, jcm 800/900. Not "high" high gain, but can be found for reasonable prices and still sound good, imo. What kind of music are you playing?

Try the Bugeras before buying a used 5150. How many of the naysayers have even played one before knocking it? I have played 5150s, JSX, XXX Peaveys and I prefer the Bugera. Check them out.

As for quality and reliability, I would rather take a chance on new gear than somone's used gear. Sure there are some people who have had problems with their Bugeras in the past. There are also many owners who have had no problems and are gigging them on a regular basis.

That Bugera 333XL is nice but not sure how road worthy it is. Great clean, crunch, high gain lead. JSX like.
True that warranty though.

Shameless spam, but you won't find a better high gainer for the price IMHO.
Just a Killer amp!

I don't know how important noise is, but I have a Carvin 100wt Valve Master that rattles your fillings, but is completely silent when not playd.
It has four power tubes, HUGE transformers, and I got it on CraigsList
for $250. Less $ than a LOT of pedals!

There is truth in this, although the 5150 doesn't really have a clean channel.
