Allman Bros vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd

Who do you prefer?

For me the Allmans are pretty good (I love some tunes, but many others I tire of quickly), but I prefer the songs and groove that LS brought. Less pure jam wankerage and more of a focus on tunes with, again, some nice grooves. And plenty of good ole whiskey-slugging, mullet-having, down home southern guitar rock goodness.

Lynyrd Skynrd doesn't do much for me anymore, maybe it is because they are so overplayed on classic rock radio, That said they definitely wrote some great tunes and had a good vibe, but for me it is hard to put anyone up against the Allman Brothers, it is really just not a fair fight. But hey, it is all opinion, LS is a great band no doubt, but when it comes to southern rock, for me, the Allmans (and Dicke Betts) are the kings.

I love me some Skynyrd, but ABB is on a whole 'nother level. The fact that Skynyrd's most famous tune is about Duane Allman definitely says something.

I chose ABB out of the two, simply because of the two that was who I listened to most recently... I like them both, but my fave Southern Rock band is Blackfoot... they may not have had quite the level of musicianship, but they rocked really hard, and I find their music more exciting...

Classic tunes by both bands, but clearly different directions. ABB were far better musicians, IMO.

To me, they're just two different bands, like the Beatles and the Stones. LS had more great, well-constructed songs, but the ABB was a jazz band, for all intents and purposes. I love them both. If I had to choose, ABB. But that's definitely selling LS short.

If it's music you like, then it's Allmans. If, however, your preference runs toward "plenty of good ole whiskey-slugging, mullet-having, down home southern guitar rock", then it's "Skinnerd", hands down. List me among the former. Allmans took me on an epic journey with every "extended jam". Skynyrd always sounded to me like, "Here are the licks that we know. We will now play them over and over".
